Comments on the location information

  • J.G. EUSTIS SURVEY (THE SECTION IS ORIENTED NW-SE, BUT THE DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN AS IF THE SECTION WERE ORIENTED N-S). CORE HOLE A-7 IS 2000 FT SW OF MINE, J.G. EUSTIS SURVEY. ELEVATION GIVEN ABOVE IS AT MINE, NEAR MILL. ELEVATION IS 1650 FT ON CORE HOLE A-7 (TD, 105 FT; 0.01% CU OR LESS AT 97-99 FT), ALL FLOWERPOT. THE MILL WAS ERECTED IN 1917, SUPPOSEDLY CLOSE TO THE MINE, TO THE N. OF THE MINE. THE ZONE IS ABOUT 8 FT THICK AND IS SHALE, WITH CHALCOCITE NODULES AND FOSSIL WOOD. STROUD AND OTHERS (1970, P. 39) TOOK SAMPLE 63 (U.S. BUREAU OF MINES SAMPLE NO. RAF-28) FROM MILL TAILINGS OR MINE-RUN ORE THAT ASSAYED AT 1.20% CU. THIS WOULD BE ZONE A OF UPPER FLOWERPOT SHALE. STROUD AND OTHERS (1970, P. 37) SAID THAT THE MINE WAS WORKED FROM 1882-1945 AND THAT ABOUT 2550 TONS OF ORE WAS PRODUCED (INCLUDING SOME ORE FROM STONEWALL COUNTY). THIS WAS PROBABLY A MCCLELLAN PROSPECT.

Deposit THE CORE HOLE A-7 DID NOT ENCOUNTER ANY COPPER AT THIS HORIZON.
Deposit STROUD AND OTHERS (1970, P. 37, 39, 56-57) IS MAIN REFERENCE. RICHARD (1915, P. 645) IS ANOTHER REFERENCE; ON JOSEPH TACKITT RANCH. CHALCOCITE NODULES AND FOSSIL WOOD. SMITH (1974, P. 66, PL. IV) GIVES GEOLOGY AND CORE HOLE A-7 DATA OF STROUD. GALLOWAY (1970, P. 33) ALSO GIVES DATA ON CORE HOLE A-7 OF STROUD. WAS ROSS RANCH (IN 1970). THE WORKINGS CONSISTED OF TWO PITS AND ONE ADIT. CUMMINS (1891, P. 451, PL. 18; 1893, P. 235) MENTIONS BUZZARD PEAK SHOWING THREE PROSPECTS, TWO S. AND ONE N. OF BUZZARD PEAK, WITHIN 2 MILES OF THE PEAK.
Deposit Discovery Year: POSSIBLY 1647; 1872 OR BEFORE?
