Geologic information

Identification information

Deposit ID 10022132
MRDS ID DE01962
Record type Site
Current site name Buffalo Gap-1

Geographic coordinates

Geographic coordinates: -99.79204, 32.29072 (WGS84)
Elevation 714
Location accuracy 100(meters)
Relative position IN 1890-1916 (ABILENE 30' SHEET), THE OLD TOWN OF BUFFALO GAP WAS AT THE NORTHERNMOST END OF THE PRESENT BUFFALO GAP. CUMMINS (1891, PL. 18) SHOWED TWO COPPER LOCALITIES. THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION (P. 451) PROBABLY REFERS TO THE NORTHERN END OF CEDAR BUTTE, PROBABLY NOT FAR FROM CEDAR TRIANGULATION STATION. IN 1890, TWO OLD ROADS RAN FROM BUFFALO GAP, TO THE NE AND TO THE SW, AROUND THE BUTTE. THE BADLANDS ON THE NORTH END OF THE BUTTE EXTEND FROM EL. 1880 FT TO 2060 FT AND HIGHER, AND THIS IS PROBABLY WHERE THE COPPER-CLAY OCCURS, WHICH WOULD BE ABOVE THE STANDPIPE LIMESTONE AND BELOW THE BULLWAGON DOLOMITE, IN THE VALE FORMATION OF THE MIDDLE CLEAR FORK GROUP. GO N. FROM N. END OF BUFFALO GAP ABOUT 0.3 MI TO INTERSECTION OF TEXAS HIGHWAYS 89 AND 1235. GO NE 0.9 MI ON HIGHWAY 89. TURN ESE 0.2 MI. GO ENE ABOUT 0.7 MI TO QUARRY ROAD. GO 0.6 MI S. TO EL. 2000 FT. SOMEPLACE AT ABOUT THIS ELEVATION IS PROBABLY THE COPPER-CLAY HORIZON. ABOUT 0.3 MI FARTHER TO SW IS EDWARDS LIMESTONE QUARRY, AT EL. 2090 FT, ABOUT 2600 FT W. OF CEDAR TRIANGULATION STATION., Acc To 200 Ft For Triangulation Station
