OF THE HOUSE. THE RED BEDS EXTEND ABOUT 1400 FT S. OF THE HOUSE TO THE BASE OF THE CRETACEOUS ANTLERS SANDSTONE (EL. 2060 FT APPROX.). THIS WOULD BE IN THE VALE FORMATION, ABOUT 160 FT ABOVE THE STANDPIPE LIMESTONE.

HALE (1972, P. 59) QUOTED TWO ARTICLES IN THE TAYLOR COUNTY NEWS (APRIL 10, 1885, P. 4; MAY 1, 1885, P. 4) THAT STATED THAT COPPER WAS FOUND IN THE MOUNTAINS S. OF ABILENE. THE ARTICLES MENTIONED THAT SILVER WAS FOUND IN A HILL 1 MI SW OF RAINY CREEK, IN A WELL ON MR. LEE'S PLACE. RAINY CREEK IS JUST E. OF ABILENE, EXTENDING PARTLY TO THE SE, BUT IT IS NOT NEAR BEAR COVE.

Deposit HALE (1972, P. 182-183) AND HALE (1977, P. 275) MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS AN OLD COPPER MINE WITHIN BEAR COVE, ABOUT 9 MI S. OF ABILENE, ON SUMRALL PLACE, JUST S. OF JOHN DURANT'S HOUSE. BOB SUMRALL SAID THAT HIS FATHER BOUGHT THE PLACE IN 1920 AND THE MINE HAD BEEN CLOSED BEFORE THAT. BEAR COVE IS ABOUT 0.5 MI N-S BY 0.5 MI E-W, IN THE E. HALF OF SEC. 7, BLK 1, SOUTHER PACIFIC RAILROAD COMPANY SURVEY.
