Deposit THE QUATERNARY B DEPOSITS ARE NARROWLY CONFINED TO THE WESTERN BORDER OF THE DEPRESSION ADJACENT TO MAJOR FRACTURE WITH INTENSE THERMAL ACTIVITY. THE PRINCIPAL BORATE AREAS ARE AT THE NORTH END AND IN THE WEST-CENTRAL PARTS OF THE SALAR. ULEXITE OCCURS AS BENCHES OF HARD PURE ORE UP TO 1.5 M THICK AND AS NODULES IN HORIZONS 20-50 CM BELOW THE SURFACE AND 10 CM TO 2 M THICK. THE DOMINANT MINERAL IS ULEXITE, BUT BORAX CRYSTALS ALSO OCCUR AS IRREGULAR AGGREGATES IN SALTY RED SILT AND SAND. THE BORAX CRYTALS ARE UP TO 8 CM IN SIZE AND OCCUR IN THE MORE SOUTHERN PARTS OF THE SALAR. NEOGENE EVAPORITES CONTAINING COLEMANITE OUTCROP ALONG THE EASTERN EDGE OF THE SALAR/BASIN. THE SALAR IS 53 KM LONG AND 8 KM WIDE.
