Comments on the geologic information

  • FERGUSON AND JEWELL (1951) BELIEVE THAT THE ORIGINAL VEIN WAS "...A CARBONATED AND PYRITIZED BEDDING PLANE FAULT, OR SHEARED ZONE, CARRYING SPARSE BARITE IN DISCONNECTED PODS AND VEINLETS." THE SHEARED ZONE IS DESCRIBED AS CONSISTING OF 34 INCHES OF SHEARED AND FRACTURED QUARTZITE OVERLYING 32 INCHES OF INTENSELY SHEARED QUARTZITE CONTAINING COARSE CRYSTALLINE PODS AND STRINGERS OF BARITE. UNDERLYING THESE TWO ZONES IS A THIRD ZONE 42 INCHES THICK, OF CLAY AND "ROTTEN", SAND-FILLED BRECCIA CONTAINING TRACES OF BARITE. THE BRECCIA FRAGMENTS ARE ANGULAR AND RANGE UP TO 3 INCHES IN THICKNESS AND 6 INCHES IN LENGTH. AGE OF MINERALIZATION: LATE - OR POST - PALEOZOIC ( FERGUSON & JEWELL, 1951 ).

  • WORKINGS INCLUDE A 40-FOOT LONG TRENCH AND 46-FOOT AND 12-FOOT LONG DRIFTS. BARITE OCCURS AS THIN SEAMS AND PODS AS MUCH AS 10 INCHES THICK AND 2 FEET IN LENGTH.

Comments on development

  • MINE WAS OPENED AND OPERATED DURING 1880'S AND BECAME IDLE DURING THE 1890'S. A FEW TONS OF BARITE WERE PRODUCED IN 1916 BY A MR. STONE. THE LAND WAS OWNED BY A MR. FLINT RAY IN THE 1950'S, AND WAS FORMERLY A PART OF THE TENNESSEE COAL AND IRON COMPANY HOLDINGS. ; ECON.COM: DEPOSIT IS REMOTE; ECONOMICALLY WORKABLE PART OF DEPOSIT IS THE UPPER, DEEPLY-WEATHERED PART.
