Economic information

Geologic structures

Type of structure Regional
Structure description Northeast-Trending Strike Belts Defining A Major Syncline
Type of structure Local
Structure description Intersection Of Two Prominent Cleavages Form A Lineation That Is Coincident With The Plunge Of The Talc Body And Contribute In Part To The Fibrous Nature Of The Talc.

Ore body information

  • General form LENS, IRREGULAR
    Strike N 40 E
    Dip 52 S
    Plunge 14
    Plunge direction S 25 W
    Thickness 15.24M
    Length 210.31M
    Width 43.89M

Controls for ore emplacement

  • Fracture Zone; Bedding - The Talc Bearing Zone Is Marked By The Presence Of White, Dolomitic Marble. Variations In Grade Of Talc Are Controlled By Dip And Plunge, Which Allows For Selective Mining Of Various Grades Of Talc.

Comments on the geologic information

  • THE TALC IS GENERALLY FIBROUS, BUT THIS DOES NOT HINDER ITS BEING SAWED INTO CRAYONS. GRADES OF TALC RANGE FROM THE DARK "SHEENED" TALC TO WHITE TALC.

Economic information about the deposit and operations

Development status Producer
Commodity type Non-metallic
Significant No
Discovery year 1941
Discoverer Hitchcock Corporation
Year of first production 1945
Production years 1945 TO PRESENT

Mining district

District name Murphy Marble Belt

Ownership information

  • Type Operator
    Owner Hitchcock Corp.
  • Type Owner
    Owner Tar Heel Investment Co.

Comments on the production information

  • CHIEF USES OF TALC POWDER ARE TOILETRIES AND TEXTILES. HITCHCOCK CORPORATION PRODUCES APPROXIMATELY ONE-FOURTH OF THE TOTAL UNITED STATES PRODUCTION OF TALC CRAYONS.

Comments on the workings information

  • AVERAGE ATTITUDE OF MARBLE UNDERGROUND IS N 40 E / 52 S. THE TALC BODY IS SHAPED SOMEWHAT LIKE THE HULL OF A SAILBOAT, WITH THE KEEL DOWNDIP AND SLIGHTLY DOWNPLUNGE FROM CENTER.

Comments on development

  • THE MINE IS OPERATED BY THE HITCHCOCK CORPORATION FOR THE TAR HEEL INVESTMENT COMPANY; THE PROPERTY IS OWNED BY THE HITCHCOCK HEIRS. THE DEPOSIT WAS DISCOVERED BY CORE DRILLING. MINING METHODS ARE AIMED AT MAXIMUM CRAYON PRODUCTION. ; ECON.COM: ACCESS TO MAJOR TRANSPORTATION ROUTES IS GOOD; QUALITY AND RESERVES OF TALC ARE SUPERIOR AND EXTENSIVE.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit THE WHITE, FINE-GRAINED, DOLOMITIC MARBLE ZONE WHICH LOCALLY CONTAINS TALC DEPOSITS IS AT THE APPROXIMATE STRATIGRAPHIC CENTER OF THE FORMATION. ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE SULFIDE MINERALS OCCUR RANDOMLY THROUGH THE MARBLE AND TALC BODIES, THEY ARE GENERALLY CONCENTRATED ALONG THE BASE OF THE DEPOSITS. "KIDNEYS" OR LENSES OF MARBLE OCCUR LOCALLY WITHIN THE MAIN TALC BODIES. JOINTS AND FAULTS HAVE LITTLE ECONOMIC OR GEOLOGIC SIGNIFICANCE (VAN HORN, 1948).
