  • ACTIVE CONTINUOUSLY SINCE DISCOVERY IN 1948 AND IS THE LARGEST GOLD MINING OPERATION IN THE COUNTY. IN 1954, 30 TO 40 TONS OF ORE PER DAY WERE BEING MINED AND MILLED. PRODUCTION IN 1956 YIELDED SOME LEAD AND ZINC IN ADDITION TO 2,651 OZ. OF GOLD AND 945 OZ. OF SILVER FROM CONCENTRATES. PRODUCED 250,000 PB. 1948 & 53

Deposit COUNTRY ROCK IS INTERBEDDED SLATE AND GREEN SCHIST WITH SMALLER AMTS. OF QUARTZITE AND METACHERT, ALL PART OF THE CALAVERAS GROUP. ORE CONSISTS OF NATIVE GOLD WITH CONSIDERABLE AMTS. OF GALENA AND PYRITE IN QUARTZ, AND SMALLER AMOUNTS OF CHALCOPYRITE & SPHALERITE. THE FREE GOLD IS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH GALENA. OPERATIONS CURTAILED IN 1958 BY A FIRE WHICH DESTROYED THE MILL - MIS V. 13, NO. 2, P. 14. GEOLOGY OF HAZEL CREEK GOLD MINE, 1957, IRA E. KLEIN (KLEIN IS A GEOLOGIST WITH U.S. BUR. RECLAMATION AND COPY OF REPORT ON FILE WITH DOM, FERRY BLDG., SF. IN 1964 OWNERS WERE HARVEY WEST AND MRS. FAY GUNBY. PROPERTY HAD BEEN ABD. IN 1959; DRILLING STARTED AGAIN EARLY SEPT. 1963 BY ALLEGHENY MNG. CO. BUT WAS ABD. AFTER A FEW MONTHS.
