  • DISCOVERED IN 1905, BUT NOT MUCH DEVELOPED UNTIL 1907 WHEN MAZUMA HILLS MINE OPENED. MAZUMA HILLS MINING CO. WAS ONE OF THE 3 MAIN MINING CO. ACTIVE DURING THE MAIN PRODUCTION PERIOD FROM 1908 TO 1916. MAZUMA HILLS MILL WAS BUILT IN 1908 NEAR THE MOUTH OF THE CANYON BELOW THE MINES, AND ALTHOUGH IT SURVIVED THE 1912 FLOOD THAT WIPED OUT THE TOWN OF MAZUMA, BUT BURNED DOWN 13 DAYS LATER, ON 13 JUL 1912. IN 1917, THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE MAZUMA HILLS MINE WERE FLOODED (AS WERE THOSE OF THE SEVEN TROUGHS COALITION) AND COULD NOT BE DRAINED, LEADING TO CLOSURE OF THE MINE. FRIEDMAN STARTED A `DEEP TUNNEL' TO DRAIN THE MINES IN 1919 WITH SLOW PROGRESS UNTIL 1926 WHEN, AFTER SEVERAL REORGANIZATIONS AND CLAIM ACQUISITIONS, WORK BEGAN IN EARNEST AND BY MARCH 1928, IT WAS 5495 FEET LONG AND A NEW POWER PLANT HAD BEEN INSTALLED. BY MARCH 1929, TUNNEL WAS 7200 FEET LONG AND EXPECTED TO CUT THE COALITION VEIN IN 200 FEET. BY 1930, MAZUMA HILLS MINING CO. WAS PART OF THE SEVEN TROUGHS GOLD
  • MINING CO. WHICH ALSO COMPRISED SEVEN TROUGHS COALITION, CLEGHORN, SUGNAL PEAK, GOLD CUP, SEVEN TROUGHS GOLD MINING CO. AS WELL AS OTHERS, COVERING 2400 ACRES. THE TUNNEL WAS 10,000 FEET LONG BY NOVEMBER 1929, WITH SOME SIDE DRIFTING AT THE 5100-FOOT STATION AND ELSEWHERE. IT EVENTUALLY DID CONNECT WITH THE TYLER SHAFT AND DEEP PORTIONS OF THE COALITION MINE BUT AT A MUCH SHALLOWER DEPTH THAN ORIGINALLY INTENDED, TOO HIGH TO DRAIN THE DEEP WORKINGS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, WITH THE ELEVATION OF THE DEEP TUNNEL PORTAL SO HIGH, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO DRAIN THE LOWER WORKINGS ANYWAY - IT WAS A PROMOTIONAL SCHEME. BY 1930, NEVADA STATE GOLD MINES CO. HAD GAINED CONTROL OF MOST OF THE MINES. IN 1934, IT WAS THE LARGEST GOLD PRODUCER IN PERSHING COUNTY; IT LEASED ITS MILL AND CYANIDE PLANTS AND MOST OF THE ORE PRODUCED CAME FROM THE OLD MINE DUMPS.

Deposit VEINS ARE SOFT CRUSHED MATERIAL WITH MOVEMENT SINCE ORE DEPOSITION. TYPICAL QUARTZ IS FRIABLE OR SUGARY. IN RICH ORE, GOLD WAS VISIBLE AS CLUSTERS OF SMALL IRREGULAR PATCHES OR AS COARSE CRYSTALLINE AGGREGATES. REAGAN MINE IS ON A SPEARATE VEIN FROM MAZUMA HILLS, BUT BOTH WERE ADJACENT AND HELD BY SAME COMPANY DURING PRODUCTIVE YEARS. VEINS ARE PARALLEL AND ABOUT 40 FEET APART. BOTH MAZUMA HILLS AND REAGAN VEINS FOLLOW BASALTIC DIKES VARYING IN WIDTH FROM A FRACTION OF AN INCH TO GREATER THAN 6 FEET. BEST ORE WAS ON THE FOOTWALL (EAST) SIDE OF THE DIKE IN BOTH THE TUFFACEOUS COUNTRY ROCK AND IN THE BASALT. NETWORK OF INTERCONNECTING QUARTZ VEINS AND VEINLETS ALONG FISSURES AND PARALLELLING DIKES IN THE RHYOLITE. FAULTS AND STRINGERS CROSS THE MAIN N-S VEIN TREND.
