  • General form TABULAR
    Strike N30W-N70W
    Dip 35-45 NE
    Thickness 7.62M

Controls for ore emplacement

  • Shear Zone; Strong Jointing

Comments on the geologic information

  • MINE IS DEVELOPED ALONG A SET OF QUARTZ VEINS THAT PARALLEL JOINTS IN A BODY OF DIORITE. VEINS AND JOINTS STRIKE N 70 DEG W AND DIP 35 - 40 DEG NE. THE VEINS ARE CLOSELY SPACED BUT PINCH AND SWELL ALONG THEIR COURSE; THE THICKNESS OF INDIVIDUAL VEINS IS ABOUT 5-6 INCHES IN GENERAL. THE MINERALIZED ZONE IS 5 TO 6 FEET THICK. WORKINGS CONSIST OF ADITS AT SEVERAL LEVELS, PROSPECT PITS, AND AN INCLINED SHAFT. (WILDEN AND SPEED, P.66-67)

Owner Herman N. Marker And K. O. Olfers Of Lovelock
    First year 1940

Comments on the production information

  • TOTAL IS FOR 1883, 1884, 1938 AND 1939. NO RECORDED PRODUCTION SINCE 1951, BUT PRODUCTION WAS DOUBTLESS LARGER THAN THIS AMT.

Comments on the workings information

  • SEVERAL ADITS AND SHAFTS. INCLINED SHAFT ON VEIN, STOPING FROM SURFACE DOWN, CAVED ADIT, CUTS. MOST EXTENSIVE WORKINGS OF THE DISTRICT.

Comments on development

  • RUINS OF OLD STONE CABIN, SQUARE NAILS AND PURPLE GLASS FRAGMENTS INDICATE THAT ACTIVITY DATES TO 1860-1870. IT MAY HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED AS EARLY AS 1849 BY EMIGRANTS, AND IT WAS WORKED INTERMITTENTLY BEGINNING IN THE 1860'S. A MILL WAS ERECTED IN 1863, AND A SECOND MILL WAS BUILT LATER. IN 1931, A LOVELOCK GROUP RELOCATED THE CLAIMS AND IN 1932, THE MANITOU GOLD MINING CO. WAS ORGANIZED. A MILL WAS ERECTED BY THEM IN 1937. THEIR HOLDINGS COMPRISED 10 UNPATENTED CLAIMS IN 1940.

Deposit 1-2 FT THICK FROM OXIDE-STAINED QUARTZ VEINS FOLLOW SHEAR ZONE IN DIORITE, WHICH IS KAOLINIZED AND CHLORITIZED, AND CUT BY SEVERAL 1-2 INCH THICK APLITE DIKES WHICH ARE PALE GREEN (CHLORITIZED). VEINS AND ADJACENT WALLROCKS ARE FE-OXIDE STAINED, SOME CU OXIDE STAINING, WALLROCK IS SHEETED PARALLEL TO VEINING TO THE SE (UP THE SLOPE TO THE RIDGE CREST), WHERE THE ZONE BECOMES 20-25 FT THICK CONTAINING 5-6, 0.5-1 FT THICK QUARTZ VEINS. ZONE AND VEIN TREND N 30 W, DIP 45 NE. VEIN MATERIAL CONSISTS OF CLEAR AND WHITE VITREOUS QUARTZ, BRECCIATED, WITH CLOTS OF CHALCOPYRITE OXIDIZING TO MELACONITE, GREEN CU OXIDES; THERE ARE STREAKS AND IRREGULARLY SHAPED DROPLETS OF A DARK SULFIDE IN THE CLEAR QUARTZ.
