Deposit THE ORE MINERAL, PYROLUSITE, OCCURS AS IRREGULAR BLEBS AND SEAMLETS WITHIN THE RED IGNEOUS ROCK IN A ZONE TRENDING N. 60-70 W. THE MINERALIZED ZONE IS ESSENTIALLY VERTICAL. THE EASTERN END OF THE TRENCH IS BROKEN BY A SMALL AREA OF INDISTINCT JOINTING. THE JOINTS STRIKE N. 48 E. AND DIP 78 N. IN THIS AREA, MANGANESE OXIDE STAINS THE RED ROCK FOR A DEPTH OF 20 FEET. THE LOWER AND UPPER TRENCHES ARE IN GREENSTONE. NO MANGANESE MINERALIZATION IS EXPOSED IN EITHER. GREENSTONE, AGGLOMERATE, AND A RED, IGNEOUS ROCK ARE EXPOSED IN THE MIDDLE TRENCH. MEGASCOPICALLY, THE RED ROCK CLOSELY RESEMBLES A RED LIMESTONE.
Deposit THE BUREAU DID EXTENSIVE TRENCHING AND STRIPPING ON THIS PROPERTY IN 1954. A TOTAL LENGTH OF 1,290 FEET OF TRENCHES AND APPROACHWAYS WAS EXCAVATED. MAXIMUM DEPTH OF THREE PARALLEL TRENCHES WAS 25 FEET AND AVERAGE WIDTH ABOUT 12 FEET. THE WORK WAS UNDERTAKEN BECAUSE OF FAVORABLE GEOLOGIC CONDITIONS AND NEARNESS TO THE CRESCENT MINE. THE RED BIRD IS ONLY ONE-FOURTH MILE WEST OF THE GLORY HOLE AREA OF THE CRESCENT MINE. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT
