Deposit DARK-GREY, NEARLY BLACK CARBONACEOUS SHALE IS PARTLY EXPOSED IN A GULLY THAT HEADS ON THE WEST SIDE OF LOOKOUT PASS ON THE VERNON-SIMPSON SPRING ROAD. THE DARK BEDS JUST SOUTH OF THE ROAD THAT PASSES BETWEEN THE ONAQUI AND SHEEPROCK MOUNTAINS CAN BE EASILY SEEN. THE CLAY SHALES ARE SEVERAL TENS OF FEET THICK LOCALLY BUT THEIR ENTIRE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL EXTENTS ARE NOT KNOWN.
