Comments on the location information

  • THE MAIN PIT IS LOCATED .37 MILES NORTH OF MIDDLE FORK OF THE HOLSTON RIVER, 3000 FEET, S 86 DEGREES E FROM THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROADS 659 AND 665 AT EBENEZER CHURCH, AND 2200 FEET N 70 DEGREES W FROM THE INTERSECTION OF HUNGRY MOTHER CREEK AND MIDDLE FORK OF THE HOLSTON RIVER. LOCATION GIVEN BY EDMUNDSON (1938) DOES NOT PLOT ANY OF THE WORKINGS FOUND IN THE FIELD. THEREFORE, AREA WORKINGS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO THREE MINE LOCATIONS FOR REPORTING AND DESCRIBING THE PROPERTY, WITH THE SHANKLIN MINE #1 CORRESPONDING TO THE SHANKLIN MINE DESCRIBED BY EDMUNDSON (1938).

Comments on the workings information

  • WORKINGS CONSIST OF A MODERATE SIZE PIT, APPROXIMATELY 80 FEET LONG, 40 FEET WIDE AND 20 FEET DEEP, AND DUMP ON HILLSIDE. PIT IS PARTIALLY FILLED IN WITH ROCK DEBRIS AND GROWN OVER. THIS PIT IS 900 FEET EAST OF THE MAIN WORKINGS (SHANKLIN MINE #1) ON THE PROPERTY. FIELD EXAMINATION CONDUCTED 11/7/85.

Comments on development

  • NO PRODUCTIONS FIGURES AVAILABLE. MOST LIKELY THE PIT AND SURFACE WORKINGS WERE DUG DURING THE SAME PERIOD (1875-1885 ?) AS THE SHANKLIN MINE (SHANKLIN MINE #1) AS DESCRIBED BY EDMUNDSON (1938).

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit DEPOSIT NOT EXPOSED, NOR DESCRIBED IN THE LITERATURE. SMALL TABULAR CLUSTERS AND MASSES OF BARITE FOUND ON THE DUMP. AS WITH THE OTHER DEPOSITS IN THE DISTRICT, BARITE MOST LIKELY OCCURS IN VEINS AND REPLACEMENT MASSES IN FRACTURED BEDROCK, AND AS IRREGULAR FRAGMENTS IN THE SOIL.
Deposit BECAUSE SURFACE WORKINGS IN THIS AREA ARE NOT CONTINUOUS, THE WORKINGS ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE SITES FOR DESCRIPTIONS AND FIELD LOCATIONS. THEY ARE REFERRED TO AS SHANKLIN MINE #1, SHANKLIN MINE #2, AND SHANKLIN MINE #3 (HERE DESCRIBED). THIS IS A NEW LOCATION, NOT PREVIOUSLY DESCRIBED IN THE LITERATURE. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT; 2 UNPUB REPT; 3 FIELD OBSERV
