  • THE MINE WAS PROBABLY FIRST WORKED ABOUT 1834. CREDNER REPORTED THE MINE HAD BEEN OPERATED FOR 20 YEARS, BUT IT WAS CLOSED DOWN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CIVIL WAR. FROM 1879 TO 1886 MINING MAGAZINES INDICATED CONSIDERABLE ACTIVITY TOOK PLACE. IN 1879 IT WAS NOTED IN ONE ARTICLE THAT WORKINGS WERE 26 M (85 FT) DEEP, THE VEIN WAS 1 M (3.5 FT) WIDE, AND 30 MEN WERE EMPLOYED. IN 1885, 10,000 TONS OF ORE WAS REPORTED BLOCKED OUT ON 3 LEVELS. THE ORE CARRIED $10 PER TON AND 50 PER CENT OF THE GOLD WAS FREE. THE MINE WAS OPERATED IN 1894 BY THE RAPPAHANNOCK GOLD MINING CO. WHEN IT WAS CLOSED, REPORTEDLY DUE TO FLOODING.
