| Deposit | ARCHEAN CRYSTALLINE ROCKS OVERLAIN BY PALEOPROTEROZOIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS. DURING ARCHEAN TIME, PALEOPROTEROZOIC ROCKS BLOCK FAULTED AND DIFFERENTIALLY RAISED; LOWERED; FORMING TROUGHS. PALEOPROTEROZOIC ROCKS AS SEDIMENTS SLUMPED INTO THE TROUGHS. AT GROVELAND MINE SLUMPED SEDIMENTS CONSIST OF A BASAL VULCAN QUARTZITE, AND LOWER, MIDDLE, AND UPPER VULCAN DEPOSITS. TOTAL THICKNESS MAY BE MORE THAN 550 FEET. THE BASAL VULCAN IS A QUARTZITE WITH TRACES OF MAGNETITE. THE LOWER VULCAN HAS MORE HEMATITE THAN MAGNETITE IN A NON-BANDED, PARTLY CLASTIC UNIT. THE MIDDLE VULCAN IS A TRANSITION UNIT CONSISTING OF INTERBEDDED LAYERS OF MAGNETITE-BEARING IRON FORMATION AND NON-BANDED OOLITIC HEMATITE. THE UPPER VULCAN IS A WELL-BANDED MAGNETITE-QUARTZ-SILICATE UNIT. THE ENTIRE VULCAN HAS SLUMPED INTO A TROUGH AND NOW APPEARS AS AN OVERTURNED SYNCLINE. AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME THAT SLUMPING TOOK PLACE THE ENTIRE AREA WAS REGIONALLY THERMAL METAMORPHOSED PRODUCING NODES OF METAMORPHISM THAT RANGE FROM CHLORITE TO SILLIMANITE, EXCLUSIVE OF KYANITE ONLY. GROVELAND MINE IS IN THE STAUROLITE ISOGRAD OF THESE METAMORPHIC ZONES. |
| Deposit | AVERAGE DIMENSIONS OF MINERALIZATION (IN METERS) DEPTH 10, LENGTH 1118, WIDTH 213, THICKNESS 159. VULCAN IRON FORMATION CONSISTS OF THINLY BEDDED LAYERS OF MAGNETITE, MARTITE, AND SPECULARITE, ALTERNATING WITH QUARTZ-RICH LAYERS; MINOR LOW-IRON SILICATE MINERALS ARE PRESENT (DUTTON AND ZIMMER, 1968). THE FORMATION RANGES FROM 300-800 FT THICK. |
