Deposit NATIONAL LEAD CO. (NOW NL INDUSTRIES) LEASED, FOR TI EXPLORATION, 1600 ACRES, LATER REDUCED TO 1200 ACRES, THEY ALSO OBTAINED DEED IN FEE SIMPLE TO 1700 MORE ACRES. THE STATE GRANTED EXPLORATION LEASES TO NATIONAL LEAD IN 1951 AND BARNUP AND SIMS, INC. IN 1952. CONCENTRATONS OF POSSIBLE ECONOMIC INTEREST WERE FOUND ON BEACH ROADS INLAND FROM PAMLICO SOUND. TWO DRILLHOLES MOSTLY IN GRAY, WHITE, OR BROWN SAND AVERAGED 4.0% HEAVY MINERALS TO A DEPTH OF 20 FT. WHILE 3 OTHERS IN FINE WHITE SAND AVERAGED ABOUT 2.1% HEAVY MINERALS IN UPPER 15 FT.
