Comments on the geologic information

  • THE AREA IS UNDERLAIN BY GRAY TO BLACK SHALE AND SLATE WHICH ACCORDING TO FUCHS HAVE YIELDED A GRAPTOLITE FAUNA OF ORDIVICIAN AGE. INTERBEDDED WITH THE SHALE ARE GRAYISH SHISTOSE MICA SLATE, GRAY SHALY SANDSTONE, LIGHT GRAY SANDSTONE, QUARTZITE, AND CONGLOMERATE OR BRECCIA. THE SHALE IS CUT BY NUMEROUS QUARTZ-PYRITE VEINLETS, AND ALSO BY A FEW MINOR VEINS OF QUARTZ, PYRITE, AND GALENA ACCORDING TO FUCHS. IGNEOUS ROCKS ARE NOT ABUNDANT AND CONSIST OF A FEW DIKES AND SILLS OF GREENISH GRAY PORPHYRY OR CHLORITIZED DIABASE CUTTING THE SHALE AND SPORADIC OCCURRENCES OF A FINE-GRAINED DIKE OF SILICIC PORPHYRY IN THE SHEAR ZONE ENCLOSING THE SANTO DOMINGO VEIN.

Deposit AVERAGE WIDTH 150 CM. THE SANTO DOMINGO VEIN IS THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT VEIN IN THE DEPOSIT, AND IS DESCRIBED IN THES TEXT IN DETAIL. OTHER VEINS ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED BELOW. THE SAN JUAN DE LA CUMBRE VEIN, IS TO THE NORTH OF SANTO DOMINGO VEIN, IS LOW GRADE AND CONTAINS NO STIBNITE. AT YUCURI, A FEW KM NW OF SANTO DOMINGO, A BEDDED VEIN IS COMPOSED OF BLACK CLAY, RUSTY CAVERNOUS QUARTZ, A LITTLE PYRITE AND GOLD. THE SAN RAFAEL VEIN, IN QUEBRADO MACHO TACUMA, IS ALONG BEDDINGS OF SLATE. IT AVERAGES 40 CM WIDE, CONSIST OF BLACK CLAY AND WHITE MILKY QUARTZ WITH PYRITE AND A LITTLE GOLD. THE SANTA MARIA VEINS, 1.5 KM DOWN STREAM FROM SAN RAFAEL VEIN, DUE EAST OF SANTO DOMINGO. THEY ARE COMPOSED OF EITHER BLACK CLAY, RUSTY CAVERNOUS QUARTZ, PYRITE AND GOLD OR WHITE FERRUGINOUS QUARTZ WITH PYRITE, ARSENOPYRITE, AND GOLD. TOTAL WIDTH IS 5-6 METERS.THE WIDE PARTS OF THE VEIN CONSISTED MAINLY OF QUARTZ, BLACK CLAY, AND PYRITE, CUT BY VEINLETS OF MILKY QUARTZ, PYRITE, AND STIBNITE. HE RECOGNIZED
Deposit SEVEN TYPES OF QUARTZ, AMONG WHICH A DARKISH BLUE GRAY GREASY VARIETY WITH ASSOCIATED STIBNITE WAS THE RICHEST IN GOLD, FOLLOWED BY A WHITE MILKY FRIABLE QUARTZ WITH KAOLIN, A WHITE AMORPHOUS TYPE WITH STIBNITE, AND A GREENISH CHLORITIC QUARTZ WITH STIBNITE AND ANGULAR PARTICLES OF GOLD. THE WELL-CRYSTALLIZED VARIETIES OF QUARTZ ARE LOW GRADE AND BARREN. STIBNITE FORMS FINE GRAINS AND PLATES. GOLD OCCURS AS COARSE PLATES OR SHEETS, WIRES, ANGULAR PARTICLES, AND IRREGULAR MASSES ATTAINING A WEIGHT OF AS MUCH AS 1200 GRAMS. IT IS FOUND MAINLY IN QUARTZ AND STIBNITE, SOME OCCURING ALONG THE BORDERS BETWEEN THESE TWO MINERALS. IN WHITE QUARTZ, THE GOLD OCCURS AS ABUNDANT FINE GRAINS, WHEREAS IN DARK QUARTZ IT FORMS PARTICLES AS MUCH AS 3 CM ACROSS. PYRITE CARRIES ONLY A LITTLE GOLD, PROBABLY LESS THAN 30 GRAMS PER TON. SULFIDE CONCENTRATES MADE BY TABLING CONTAIN 30-60GRAMS
