Comments on development

  • ECON.COM: ASBESTIFORM MINERALS ABSENT. ON MAY 21, 1994, LUZENAC PURCHASED MONTANA TALC CO. FROM COSTAIN GROUP PLC OF THE UK. THE YELLOWSTONE MINE WAS ADJACENT TO MONTANA TALC'S JOHNNY GULCH MINE. SEVERAL PIT WALL COLLAPSES ON THE MONTANA TALC SIDE, AND A HISTORY OF LOCAL TECTONIC ACTIVITY (AN EARTHQUAKE IN 1956 REACHED 7.1 ON THE RICHTER SCALE) THREATENED LUZENAC'S NEARBY WORKING SITE. FURTHERMORE, OWING TO DIMINISHING RESERVES, MONTANA TALC WAS HAVING TO MINE AT DEEPER AND DEEPER LEVELS TO ACCESS TALC ORE WHICH CREATED DANGEROUSLY STEEP PIT WALLS. CONSEQUENTLY, TWO DAYS AFTER THE PURCHASE, LUZENAC CLOSED DOWN THE MINE AND LAID OFF THE WORK FORCE. THE JOHNNY GULCH PIT WILL BE BACKFILLED.
