BARITE MINED IN OPEN PIT BY INDUSTRIAL MINERALS,INC.UNTIL 1966 AFTER BUYING THE PROPERTY IN 1949.UNDERGROUND MINING FROM 1910-1953.

  • FIRST MINE WORKED AND SECOND LARGEST PRODUCER IN THE KINGS CREEK GROUP (VAN HORN,ET.AL.,1949),ALTHOUGH KEITH AND STERRETT(1931) STATE THE WORKS EAST OF KINGS CREEK ("NORTHEAST"BARITE PIT) WERE OLD AND NOT BEING WORKED,BUT THE LATEST OPERATIONS ARE SOUTH (THE BIG INCLINE) AND SOUTHWEST (WEST HILL MINE) OF THE TOWN,ON BOTH SIDES OF THE RAILROAD TRACKS.CHEROKEE CHEMICAL COMPANY STARTED UNDERGROUND MINING IN 1910 AND ERECTED A MILL AT THE MINE. THE CLINCHFIELD SAND AND FELDSPAR CORPORATION LEASED THE PROPERTY IN THE EARLY 1930'S AFTER THE 1929 CRASH AND FOLLOWING DEPRESSION FORCED BANKRUPTCY ON THE CHEROKEE CHEMICAL COMPANY.IN 1943 MINING DISCONTINUED AND THE PLANT WAS USED TO GRIND BARITE ORE FROM TENNESSEE.IN 1949,INDUSTRIAL MINERALS,INC. BOUGHT THE CHEROKEE CHEMICAL COMPANY'S HOLDINGS.BARITE WAS MINED UNTIL 1966.
