Geologic structures

Type of structure Regional
Structure description Regionally, The Area Is Dominated By Two Synclines (The Rooiberg Trough And The Elandsberg Trough) Enclosing A Broad Anticline. Two Thrust Zones Traverse The Area.
Type of structure Local
Structure description Gently Dipping Host Rocks (Quartzites And Shale) Marked By Steeply Dipping Mineralized And Brecciated Fractures And Fissures. Three Pre-Mineral Thrust Faults Developed Subsequent To Regional Folding Enhance Mining With Cassiterite Concentrations But Concurrently Make Mining Difficult Because Of Major Roof Support Requirements.

Comments on the production information

  • ORE DATA ARE TONS OF ORE MILLED. TIN ENTRIES ARE TONS OF TIN METAL CONTAINED IN CONCENTRATES.

Workings at the site

  • Type of workings Underground
    Overall depth 150M

Comments on the workings information

  • MINING FOLLOWS MINERALIZED POCKETS OF ORE IN FRACTURES AND FISSURES IN DEFINABLE ZONES. THE POCKETS ARE ROUGHLY LENTICULAR, VARY IN SIZE FROM A FEW CENTIMETERS TO ONE METER, AND AT TIMES FORM SHEET-LIKE DEPOSITS OF HIGH GRADE ORE ALONG THE BEDDING PLANES OF THE HOST ROCKS. MOST OF THE PRODUCTION IS OBTAINED FROM DEVELOPMENT. STOPING IS LIMITED BECAUSE OF RARITY OF SUFFICIENTLY-SIZED ORE POCKETS. VALUE SPORADIC. RESERVES OF STANDING ORE ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ESTIMATE.

Comments on development

  • MILL.CAP: 0.5 MIL. MET. T/YR. ; ECON.COM: CURRENTLY, SOUTH AFRICA'S LARGEST PRODUCER OF TIN CONCENTRATED ANNUALLY. FURTHER, THE FIRM DECIDED ( IN NOVEMBER 1978 ) TO CONSTRUCT A TIN SMELTER ON SITE TO MEET PROJECTED SALES DEMANDS. A FAVORABLE LONG-LIFE OUTLOOK IS THUS ON THE HORIZON.

Deposit MAX. THICKNESS REFERS TO MINERALIZED BRECCIA FRACTURES (AVE. THICKNESS: 1.5 METERS). FISSURE WIDTHS ARE ABOUT 0.1 METER. STRIKE & DIP REFER TO HOST ROCKS. MINERALIZED FISSURES AND FRACTURES ARE STEEPLY DIPPING WITHIN HOST ROCKS. DEPTHS TO TOP AND BOTTOM REFER TO MINING DEPTHS FROM OUTCROP TO CURRENT MINING DEPTHS BELOW THE SURFACE. EXPLORATION HAS PROVED EXTENSION OF MINERALIZATION TO GREATER DEPTHS.
