  • UTM COORDINATES AND ELEVATION AT CENTER OF SURFACE WORKINGS. NO WORKINGS WERE FOUND AT THE LOCATION GIVEN BY EDMUNDSON (1938). THREE AREAS OF WORKINGS WERE FOUND ON THE PROPERTY AND WILL BE DESCRIBED AS SHANKLIN MINE #1, #2, AND #3. THE LARGEST WORKINGS IS DESIGNATED SHANKLIN MINE #1. IT IS LOCATED .4 MILES NORTH OF MIDDLE FORK OF THE HOLSTON RIVER, 2150 FEET S 32 DEG E FROM THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROADS 659 AND 665 AT EBENEZER CHURCH, 3000 FEET N 77 DEG W FROM THE INTERSECTION OF HUNGRY MOTHER CREEK AND MIDDLE FORK OF THE HOLSTON RIVER.

  • FAIRLY EXTENSIVE SURFACE WORKINGS OVER THE 500 BY 200 FT AREA ALONG HILLSIDE. EDMUNDSON (1938) DESCRIBED THE SURFACE WORKINGS AS AN OPEN CUT 60 FEET LONG, 40 FEET WIDE AND 30 FEET DEEP, AND SEVERAL SHALLOW TRENCHES AS MUCH AS 300 FEET LONG. FIELD EXAMINATION CONDUCTED 11/7/85. AT THAT TIME, SURFACE WORKINGS CONSISTED OF A 50 FT DIAMETER PIT, APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET DEEP, NUMEROUS SMALLER TRENCHES, UP TO 10 FEET WIDE, 10 FEET DEEP AND 100 FEET LONG, AND SHALLOW PITS AND SMALL ROCK DUMPS. MOST OF THE SURFACE WORKINGS ARE PARTIALLY FILLED WITH ROCK DEBRIS AND GROWN OVER.
