| Deposit | THE MANGANESE ORE OCCURS IN A BED OF CLAY 1.2 TO 1.5 M (4 TO 5 FT) THICK AND IN FRACTURED SANDSTONE AT THE BASE OF THE RIDGELEY SANDSTONEON THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF A SYNCLINE. THE CLAY IS PROBABLY RESIDUAL FROM A BED OF LIMESTONE WHICH ONCE OCCUPIED THE POSITION THAT IS NOW OCCUPIED BY THE CLAY (NEW SCOTLAND OR LICKING CREEK LIMESTONE (?)). THE BULK OF THE ORE MINED BEFORE 1920 IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN FOUND IN ONE OF THE INCLINES MADE FROM THE UPPER TUNNEL. ONE POCKET OF SOLID ORE ENCOUNTERED THERE IS REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN 1.2 M (4 FT) THICK. ONE SHAFT AND DRIFT YIELDED 4 TO 5 TONS OF ORE. VEINLETS OF MANGANESE WERE FOUND IN BROKEN SANDSTONE 18 M (58 FT) FROM THE PORTAL OF THE LOWER TUNNEL AND YIELDED ABOUT 100 POUNDS OF MANGANESE. AT THE SOUTH END OF THE LOWER TUNNEL WORKABLE ORE WAS FOUND IN LENSES AS MUCH AS 0.6 M (2 FT) THICK, THE LENSES WERE SAID TO BE SOLID ORE BUT SOME ORE OCCURRED INTERMIXED WITH THE ASSOCIATED SANDSTONE. THE ORE WAS MINED BY HAND IN SHAFTS AND TUNNELS AND AS FAR |
| Deposit | AS IS KNOWN ALL THE MARKETED ORE WAS HANDPICKED. ORE IS STILL PLENTIFUL ON THE DUMP MATERIAL AND IN OUTCROPS IN THE SHAFT WALLS. |
