Comments on the workings information

  • A NUMBER OF PITS WERE DUG DURING PROSPECTING. THE HEISHMAN PIT WAS CAVED WHEN STOSE AND MISER VISITED IN 1920, BUT STILL WAS 3 M (10 FT) OM THE NEW SCOTLAND LIMESTONE.

Comments on development

  • SOME YEARS BEFORE 1920, S.R. HEISHMAN PUT DOWN A LARGE HOLE ON THE UPPER WEST SLOPE OF THE SOUTH END. PROSPECTING AROUND 1920 WAS DONE ON THE SOUTH END OF THE RIDGE AND AT OTHER PLACES BY ALEXANDER FLEMING AND OTHER PARTIES. NO COMMERCIAL DEPOSITS OF MANGANESE ORE WERE FOUND.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit PIT DUG BY HEISHMAN EXPOSED BRECCIATED CHERT CEMENTED BY MANGANESE ENCLOSED IN DARK WAD SOIL. A FEW FRAGMENTS OF HARD ORE WERE EVIDENT IN 1920. ON THE UPPER SOUTH SLOPE OF THE RIDGE, CHERT AND SANDSTONE FRAGMENTS IMPREGNATED WITH MANGANESE COVER THE SURFACE. THE PITS OF LATER PROSPECTING PENETRATED CHERT, SAND, AND SANDY CLAY, WHICH ARE RESIDUAL FROM THE NEW SCOTLAND LIMESTONE.
