  • OPENINGS CONSIST OF A SHAFT AND TWO OPEN CUTS. CUTS ARE NEAR THE BOTTOM OF A GULCH, AND ARE IN 'FLINT' AND CLAY, MOST OF IT TALLOW CLAY. A SHAFT 25 FEET DEEP WAS FOUND ABOUT THIRTY FEET ABOVE THE OPEN CUT, SUNK IN CLAY AND BROKEN LIMESTONE BLOCKS; GALENA WAS FOUND AT 12 FEET DOWN, AND SHPALERITE AT 13 FEET.

Deposit TALLOW CLAY WAS EXPOSED IN CUTS. CLAY IS PINK, RED, YELLOW SPECKED WITH WHITE, AND STRIPED, AND OCCURS AS SEAMS OR BANDS 2-3 INCHES THICK AND 12-15 FEET IN LENGTH, SEPERATED FROM EACH OTHER BY GRITTY BANDS. AN ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT OXIDES OF ZINC, ALUMINUM, AND SILICA FORMED THE PRIMARY CONSTITUENTS, HAVING ABOUT 11.31% METALLIA ZINC.
Deposit THE HORIZON (5) IN WHICH GALENA AND SMITHSONITE ARE FOUND MAY BE PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE CALCIFEROUS SERIES BEDS, AND OCCASIONALLY BE FOUND IN THE ST. JOE MARBLE. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT
