  • PRODUCTION UNKNOWN BECAUSE INCLUDED WITH SAUNDERS MINE WHICH IS ADJACENT AND NE OF PROPERTY. TOTAL PRODUCTION OF SAUNDER'S MINE PLUS ADJACENT PROPERTY WAS 8,000-9,000 LONG TONS OF WASHED ORE (ESPENSHADE,P. 126)

Comments on the workings information

  • THE SHAFT IN 1987 WAS 15 FT DEEP AND 10 FT WIDE ON THE NW SIDE OF NE TRENDING DEPRESSION IN THE WOODS. SEVERAL HUNDRED FT SW OF THE SHAFT AND SE OF THE ROAD ARE SEVERAL TRENCHES. ABOUT 85 FT SE OF SHAFT IS A HORIZONTAL ADIT TRENDING N 30 W AND OPEN AND ACCESSIBLE FOR 20 FT. NO ORE WAS SEEN DURING FIELD CHECK. ABOUT 900 FT NE OF SHAFT DESCRIBED HERE AND 1870 FT ALONG GRAVEL ROAD NE OF ROUTE 696 IS ONE LARGE PIT 25 FT BY 25 FT FILLED WITH TRASH. NO ROCKS EXPOSED BUT A FEW NODULES OF MN ORE COULD BE SEEN IN ROAD BED DURING 1987 VISIT.

Comments on development

  • A SHAFT WAS SUNK 127 FT IN 1916 BY HANCOCK 900 FT NE OF WORKINGS DESCRIBED HERE NEAR THE WOODS-SAUNDERS PROPERTY LINE BUT WAS ABANDONED BECAUSE OF WATER AND INADEQUATE PUMP. NATIONAL PAINT AND MANGANESE LYNCHBURG SANK A SHAFT OF 35 FT IN 1923, BUT LOCATION ON PROPERTY IS UNCERTAIN. IN 1941, THE HALL FAMILY SUNK A 58 FT SHAFT AGAIN NEAR THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY WITH SAUNDERS MINE. (JOHN HALL, EVINGTON, PERSONAL COMMUNICATION).

Deposit 2 ORE ZONES: EASTERN BED ON SE WITH WAD IS WIDE CONTAINING STRINGERS OF SOFT MANGANESE OXIDES. A NW ZONE CONTAINS 2 SEAMS OF MANGANIFEROUS YELLOW CLAY. UNDERGROUND CROSSCUTS BY HALLS (900 FARTHER NORTH) SHOWED 20 FT SEAM OF YELLOW CLAY WITH SCATTERED MN OXIDE NODULES. ABOUT 50 FT SW OF CROSSCUTS NEARLY MASSIVE MN OXIDE NODULES WERE FOUND OVER WIDTH OF 3-4 FT OF YELLOW CLAY. (ESPENSHADE, 1954, P.129-130).
