Comments on the geologic information

  • CALUMET AND HECLA CONGLOMERATE CAN BE TRACED FOR A DISTANCE OF MORE THAN 40 MILES. FOR MOST OF ITS LENGTH IT IS VERY THIN (1' TO A FEW FEET). IN CALUMET AREA, IT AVERAGES MORE THAN 10 FEET THICK. THE KEARSARGE AMYGDALOID IS AN OPHITIC FLOW WITH DISTINCTIVE PLAGIOCLASE PHENOCRYSTS IN THE UPPER PORTION. IT RANGES FROM ONE THICK FLOW TO FIVE THINNER ONES.

Comments on the workings information

  • IN THIS DISTRICT, COPPER GRADE IN THE PRODUCTIVE PART OF THE KEARSARGE LODE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN AS RICH AT OR VERY NEAR THE OUTCROP AS AT GREATER DEPTH, BUT THE REMAINDER OF THE LODE WAS RELATIVELY POOR AT THE SURFACE. AREAS OF LOW GRADE ORE NEAR THE SURFACE ARE COINCIDENT WITH AREAS OF RELATIVELY THIN OR CELLULAR, IMPERMEABLE LODE ROCKS. KEARSARGE WAS ONE OF THE RICHEST LODES - ESPECIALLY NEAR HANGING WALL. LODE AVERAGES 6-13 FEET THICK IN AREA OF MINING ACTIVITY. IN TOTAL, OSCEOLA AMYGDALOID HAS BEEN MINED FOR A STRIKE LENGTH OF ABOUT 4 MILES AND THROUGH INCLINED SHAFTS TO A DEPTH OF 4,500 FT (2,700 FT VERTICALLY).

Comments on development

  • ECON.COM: WORKED WITHOUT PROFIT 1868-1875 AND ABANDONED. LEASED ABOUT 1873. IN 1880 WORK WAS BEGUN BY THE NEW COMPANY ON OSCEOLA AMYGDALOID. CENTENNIAL MINING CO. WAS ORGANIZED ABOUT 1878. WORK WAS SUSPENDED IN THE FALL OF 1883 FOR A LACK OF FUNDS. VERY LITTLE WORK WAS DONE IN 1897.
