Economic information

Geologic structures

Type of structure Regional
Structure description Pluton Is In Elongate Cluster Of Stocks Aligned Perpendicular To The Regional Grain Of The Island. Fractures Striking N.18 W. And N.2 E. In The Helecho Porphyry Match Mineralized Fractures In The Tanama Deposit. The N.30 E.-Striking Fractures Match The Trend Of The Elongate Cluster Of Stocks Of Which Helecho And Tanama Are A Part.
Type of structure Local
Structure description Veins And Mineralized Fractures Show Difference In Orientation Between The Porphyry And Metavolcanic Country Rocks. N.30 E.-Striking Fractures Predominate In The Volcanic Rocks But Are Rare In The Porphyry.

Controls for ore emplacement

  • Chalcopyrite Is More Commonly Disseminated Than Veinlet Controlled

Comments on the geologic information

  • STOCK INTRUDES BASALTIC ROCKS OF CRETACEOUS AGE AND FELSIC VOLCANIC ROCKS OF EARLY EOCENE AGE.

Economic information about the deposit and operations

Development status Occurrence
Commodity type Metallic
Deposit size Medium
Significant No
Discovery year 1958

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • THE HELECHO DEPOSIT CONTAINS A SLIGHTLY SMALLER AMOUNT OF ORE THAN THE TANAMA DEPOSIT, OF ABOUT THE SAME GRADE (COX, 1985.).

Comments on development

  • 1956, RECONNAISSANCE, KENNECOTT COPPER CORPORATION. 1958, EXPLORATION PERMIT, KENNECOTT, SURFACE MAPPING, STREAM SEDIMENT GEOCHEMISTRY. DRILLING STARTED AT HELECHO, DEPOSIT HAS BEEN PENETRATED BY 31 VERTICAL DIAMOND-DRILL HOLES.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit DEPOSIT IS SIMILAR TO THE TANAMA DEPOSIT, AND IS COEXTENSIVE WITH A TONALITE PORPHYRY STOCK. MOST OF DEPOSIT IS MANTLED BY A THICK SAPROLITE LAYER, BUT IS WELL EXPOSED IN THE RIVER. COPPER ORE GENERALLY CONFINED TO PORPHYRY PLUTON NOT ASSOCIATED WITH SPECIFIC ALTERATION ASSEMBLAGE.
