Comments on development

  • INITIAL DETAILED INVESTIGATIONS BY MIDEAST INDUSTRIES, LTD., IN 1966, CONCLUDED THAT THE GRADE OF THE DEPOSIT WAS TOO LOW, AND THAT THE COST OF CONSTRUCTING A HARBOUR PRECLUDED DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPEN-PIT MINING OPERATION. SUBSEQUENT RE-EVALUATION BY THE DMMR IN 1976 SUGGESTED AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF MINING (SOLUTION FOLLOWED BY SOLAR EVAPORATION), WHICH COULD BE A FEASIBLE METHOD OF EXPLOITING THIS DEPOSIT.

Deposit Discovery Year: ANCIENT
Deposit IN THE SOUTWESTERN PART OF SAUDI ARABIA, ROCK SALT OCCURS AS A STRATIGRAPHIC MEMBER OF A REGIONAL MIOCENE EVAPORITE SEQUENCE. THIS OCCURRENCE IS IN THE FORM OF A SALT DIAPIR; TECTONIC PRESSURES HAVE RESULTED IN THE SALT MOVING UPWARD, PENETRATING UPPER MIOCENE AND QUATERNARY STRATA; THIS UPWARD MOVEMENT IS PROBABLY STILL IN PROGRESS.
