Comments on the location information

  • SURVEY ALONG ELM CREEK, ELONGATED E-W SECTIONS. SECTION 28 IS ABOUT 1 MI E-W, BY 0.25 MI N-S, ON W. SIDE OF ELM CREEK. THE POSSIBLE SITE IS ON A RAVINE OF INDIAN CREEK. SEC. 28 IS ON THE DIVIDE BETWEEN INDIAN CREEK AND LITTLE ELM CREEK, WHICH JOINS ELM CREEK IN THE SE CORNER OF SEC. 28. THIS WOULD BE IN THE VALE FORMATION, ABOVE THE STANDPIPE LIMESTONE AND BELOW THE BULLWAGON DOLOMITE, IN THE CLEAR FORK GROUP. THE OLD ANSON ROAD CROSSES INTERSTATE 20 ABOUT 2.8 MI NE OF THE SITE. ABOUT 4 MI NE OF THE SITE, E. OF THE OLD PRIDE REFINERY, ON THE SAYLES LEASE (SEC. 22, ON W. SIDE OF ELM CREEK), 2 MI N. OF ABILENE CITY LIMITS (1,000 FT S. OF LANIUS), TWO OLD SMELTERS WERE HERE WHEN THE FIRST SETTLERS CAME TO ABILENE. HALE (1972, P. 117, MAP, P. 215) QUOTED RAY (1931), SAYING THAT THESE WERE CALLED "THE OLD SPANISH SMELTERS," AND HALE ALLUDED TO THE FACT THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN USED TO SMELT COPPER.

Deposit THIS COULD BE WIDESPREAD BUT MOSTLY BURIED.
Deposit HALE (1972, P. 117, 183, 215) SAID THAT A COPPER MINE WAS OPERATED ABOUT 50 YEARS AGO ON THE E.H. KENDALL PLACE, WITHIN 3 MILES OF THE ABILENE CITY LIMITS AND WEST OF THE OLD ANSON ROAD, AND 4 MI SW OF TWO OLD SPANISH SMELTERS. HALE (1977, P. 275) QUOTED UDDEN, BAKER, AND BOSE (1916, P. 121) WHO SHOWED THE MINE NW OF ABILENE. THE KENDALLS PURCHASED THE PROPERTY IN 1945, DUG DOWN THE OLD SHAFT 8 FT, AND FOUND THE COPPER ALONG WITH OLD TOOLS. THE EXACT LOCATION WAS NOT GIVEN.
