Deposit THE FIRST CLAIMS WERE LOCATED IN 1868, AND IT WAS ORGANIZED AS THE MOUNT ROSE DISTRICT IN 1873. THE MINES WERE ACTIVELY WORKED FROM 1879 TO 1891, WITH REVIVALS OF INTEREST IN 1907-1915 AND 1931-1935, WHEN A SMALL AMOUNT OF SILVER ORE WAS MINED. MOST OF THE PRODUCTION WAS MADE PRIOR TO 1900 WHEN RECORDS WERE INCOMPLETE. THE EARLY ORE WAS CRUSHED IN STAMPS AND TREATED BY PAN AMALGAMATION. THE EARLY TAILINGS WERE REWORKED TWICE, MOST RECENTLY IN 1913-14. THE MAJOR MINING PROPERTY IN THE DISTRICT WAS THE SILVER BUTTE MINING COMPANY. DECKER (1974) REPORTS THAT THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF THE DUMPS INDICATE EXTENSIVE WORKINGS ON THE MAIN RIDGE IN THE DISTRICT (MAINLY IN SEC. 22), AND THAT THE CANYON CONTAINS THE RUINS OF AT LEAST TWO MILLS. SOME OF THE VEINS HAVE YIELDED PLACERS WHICH WERE WORKED AT A PROFIT. ; INFO.SRC : 1 PUB LIT; 2 UNPUB REPT; 3 FIELD OBSERV
