Comments on the geologic information

  • PROPERTY IS ON A DISSECTED PEDIMENT LARGELY COVERED BY ALLUVIUM. CINNABAR OCCURS IN BUNCHES AND VEINLETS IN BRECCIATED LIMESTONE BENEATH A FLAT-LYING BED OF SHALE AND SPARSELY DISSEMINATED IN BRECCIATED LIMESTONE ALONG A LIMESTONE-SHALE CONTACT. IRREGULAR FAULTS OF SMALL DISPLACEMENT HAVE OFFSET THE SHALE-LIMESTONE CONTACT. THE BEST ORE WAS FOUND ON THE 28-FT LEVEL BELOW A FLAT-LYING FAULT.

Comments on development

  • SOON AFTER ITS DISCOVERY, THE PROPERTY WAS LEASED BY C. BAKER AND R. JENNING WHO HAULED ORE TO THE MONTGOMERY MINE RETORTS. IN 1942 THE PROPERTY WAS RESTAKED BY C.N. WILLIAMSON AND CHARLES GARTIEZ AS THE ROMAN GROUP. THEY BUILT A VERTICAL AUTOMATIC-FEED 2 PIPE RETORT WITH A CAPACTIY OF ABOUT 5 TPD AND IN 1942-1943 THEY RECOVERED MORE THAN 100 FLASKS HG. WITH THE DECLINE IN MERCURY PRICE FOLLOWING WWII, TITLE LAPSED IN 1949 AND THEN IN 1950 W.J. BAKER AND JOE MACKENZIE RELOCATED THE GROUND AS THE FRECKLES 1-4 CLAIMS. IN 1955 WHEN HG PRICES WERE UP AGAIN, LESSEE J.E. HOLSTROM BEGAN SPORADIC MINING. SANK A NEW SHAFT, AND PRODUCED 552 FLASKS BY THE END OF 1962. IN 1965, ED HAGER OF CORDERO MINING CO. LOCATED THE FRECKLES 5-7 CLAIMS AND IN 1965-1966, CORDERO, UNDER LEASE, PRODUCED 450 FLASKS HG FROM ORE HAULED TO THEIR FURNACE PLANT NEAR MCDERMITT. SINCE 1966, THE MINE HAS LAIN IDLE. NO ACTIVITY NOTED DURING EXAMINATION IN 1984, BUT RECENT ROTARY DRILL HOLES WERE NOTED 500 M SE OF
  • THE WORKINGS AND 500 M NE OF SAMPLE SITE 2339.
