  • OPENED IN 1867. OWNED BY JOHN BEATTIE, WORKED BY HIS SONS. IN 1911, TWO QUARRIES, WEST QUARRY 1500 FEET LONG EAST TO WEST, 800 FEET WIDE, 70 FOOT HIGH WORKING FACE; EAST QUARRY 2000 FEET LONG EAST TO WEST, 400 FEET WIDE, 70 FOOT HIGH WORKING FACE. WEST QUARRY HAS NEARLY HORIZONTAL PLICATED GNEISSIC FOLIATION. SHEETS 2 TO 8 FEET THICK ARE HORIZONTAL OR DIP 10 DEG. NE. PEGMATITE DIKES PRESENT, ONE TO THREE FEET THICK. SOME DIKES OR BANDS OF FINE BIOTITE GRANITE GNEISS AS MUCH AS 4 INCHES THICK. ROCK MEDIUM TO DARK REDDISH GRAY COLOR, COARSE TO VERY COARSE BANDED PLICATED GNEISSOSE PORPHYRITIC TEXTURE. STONE EXPORTED FOR MANY USES
