Comments on the geologic information

  • MINERALIZATION OF THE OREBODY CONSISTS OF A DISSEMINATED PORPHYRY TYPE HOSTED BY QUARTZ-DIORITE SUB-VOLCANIC INTRUSIVES. MANY OF THESE HAVE MASSIVE SKARN-TYPE ASSEMBLAGES DEVELOPED AT THE CONTACTS WITH MESOZOIC CARBONATE COUNTRY ROCKS. MAGNETITE IS THE DOMINANT ORE MINERAL IN THE SKARN ASSEMBLAGES WITH ACCESSORY HEMATITE, PYRITE, PYRRHOTITE, CHALEOPYRITE, SPHALERITE, GALENA, BORNITE, AND TETRAHEDRITE. (1989) AS REPORTED IN 1989, HEAD GRADES FOR COPPER AT THE MOLDOVA NOUA MINE VARY WITH THE TYPE OF SURFACE OR UNDERGROUND MINING OPERATIONS. THE OPEN PIT PRODUCTION YIELDS GRADES BETWEEN .23% AND .35% COPPER WHILE THE UNDERGROUND OPERATIONS CONTAIN APPROXIMATELY .70% COPPER. THE MINE ALSO CONTAINS BYPRODUCTS OF MOLYBDENITE, GOLD, AND SULFUR. THE HEAD GRADES FOR THE MOLYBDENITE ARE ABOUT .055% AND THE GOLD IS LESS THAN 2 GRAMS PER METRIC TON. THE PORPHYRY SULPHIDE PARAGNEISS IS DOMINATED BY PYRITE WITH ACCESSORY CHALCOPYRITE, MOLYBDENITE, AND TETRAHEDRITE. THE UPPER PORTION OF THE OREBODY IS PARTIALLY OXIDIZED. (1989) BASEMENT FORMATIONS ARE PENETRATED BY DIKES OF LARAMIAN PORPHYRIC GRANODIORITES WITH BIOTITE AND HORNBLENDE. THE SURROUNDING ROCKS, ARGILLACEOUS LIMESTONES, UNDERWENT THERMAL ALTERATIONS AND ALSO PYRO-METASOMATIC AND HYDRO-METASOMATIC ALTERATIONS. (1991) MINERALIZATIONS OCCUR AS IRREGULAR-SHAPED BODIES AND IMPREGNATION ZONES. EVIDENCE LEADS TO THE BELIEF THAT MANY GEOCHEMICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL ANOMALIES TOOK PLACE. (1991) THE TOTAL AREA FOR THE MOLDOVA NOUA MINE ENCOMPASSES APPROXIMATELY 4 SQUARE MILES. (1991) MOST RUMANIAN COPPER MINES ARE GENERALLY LOW GRADE AND MINERALOGICALLY COMPLEX. (1989)

Comments on the production information

  • AS OF 1989, 80% OF THE TOTAL EXTRACTION WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY OPEN PIT METHODS AND 20% BY COMBINED UNDERGROUND METHODS. OPEN PIT METHODS YIELD A PRODUCTION RATE OF 4.8 MILLION TONS PER YEAR WITH A STRIPPING RATIO OF 3:1. UNDERGROUND METHODS HAVE A RATE OF 1.2 MILLION TONS PER YEAR. THE EXTRACTED COPPER ORE IS THEN SHIPPED TO THE ZLATNA COPPER SMELTER. THERE, THE COPPER IS REFINED AND READIED FOR PRODUCT USE. IN 1984, ESTIMATES INDICATED 80,000 METRIC TONS OF CONCENTRATE RESULTING FROM 5,000,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE THROUGHPUT. FOR YEARS 1985-1990, ESTIMATES SHOWED 85,000 METRIC TONS OF CONCENTRATE FROM 6,000,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE THROUGHPUT. FLOTATION RECOVERY RATES AT MOLDOVA NOUA ARE APPROXIMATELY 74% IN THE CONCENTRATE. ACCORDING TO COMMODITIES RESEARCH UNIT LIMITED IN 1990, THE OPEN PIT PORTION AT MOLDOVA NOUA IS A NON-VIABLE OPERATION WHILE THE UNDERGROUND EXTRACTION PROCESSES ARE MARGINAL. THE RESEARCH UNIT SPECULATES THAT THE MINE WILL SOON BE FORCED TO CLOSE DUE TO INTERNATIONAL PRESSURES. THEY ALSO SUGGEST THAT THE TWO COPPER SMELTERS IN ROMANIA TO BE MEDIUM TERM CLOSURES. THIS IS BECAUSE OF THEIR REMOTENESS FROM A SEA PORT AND THE UNLIKELY UPGRADING TO CONFORM TO ENVIRONMENTAL NEEDS. MOLYBDENUM CONCENTRATES ARE TREATED AT A SMALL HYDROMETALLURGICAL TREATMENT PLANT AT MOLDOVA NOUA. (1989) AS OF 1989, COPPER CONCENTRATE, PYRITE CONCENTRATE, AND MOLYBDENUM CONCENTRATE ARE THE MAJOR PRODUCTS OF THE MINING OPERATIONS.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • THE ESTIMATED RESERVES IN 1989 WERE DETERMINED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 300 TO 400 MILLION METRIC TONS, REFERRING TO TOTAL RESERVES FOR THE MOLDOVA NOUA DISTRICT. THE OPEN PIT RESERVE IS KNOWN AS THE VARAD DEPOSIT AND THE UNDERGROUND OREBODY IS REFERRED TO AS SUVOROV. ALTHOUGH SOME LITERATURE TREATS THESE TWO AS SEPARATE MINES, RUMANIAN OFFICIALS CONSIDER THEM CLASSIFIED AS ONE UNDER THE MOLDOVA NOUA MINE. (1991) PRELIMINARY PREPRODUCTION RESERVES WERE ESTIMATED TO BE THE FOLLOWING: 253,500,000 METRIC TONS FOR THE OPEN PIT PORTION WITH .35% CU, 3.0% S, AND .0025% MO; UNDERGROUND SKARN DEPOSITS WERE 59,000,000 METRIC TONS WITH .70% CU.

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE MINING EQUIPMENT USED AT THE MINE SITE, AS OF 1989, IS REPORTED TO BE PRIMARILY ROMANIAN MANUFACTURED. THE CONDITION OF THE EQUIPMENT IS EXTREMELY OUTDATED, POORLY MAINTAINED, AND IN MANY CASES, OBSOLETE. AS OF 1989, THE ORE EXTRACTED, EXCLUDING MOLYBDENUM AND GOLD, IS TRANSPORTED TO THE ZLATNA COPPER REFINERY.
  • THE CAPACITY AT THE CONCENTRATOR WAS DETERMINED TO BE 107 DRY METRIC TONS OF ORE PER DAY.(1991)
