Comments on the production information

  • MINING OPERATIONS AT THE UCHALI MINE COMMENCED IN 1958 AND PRODUCTION CAPACITY WAS EXPANDED IN 1983. THE COST OF MINING ONE METRIC TON OF ORE IN 1990 WAS R8.36. THE INVESTMENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNDERGROUND SECTION WILL ENABLE THE TOTAL ORE PRODUCTION FROM UCHALI TO REMAIN BETWEEN 1.5 AND 2 MILLION METRIC TONS UNTIL BEYOND THE TURN OF THE CENTURY. A NEW ORE BODY (NOVO-UCHALI) HAS BEEN DISCOVERED APPROXIMATELY 3 KILOMETERS FROM THE EXISTING MINE. IT COULD BE ACCESSED FROM THE UCHALI UNDERGROUND MINE, BUT AT THE PRESENT, THERE ARE NO PLANS FOR ITS DEVELOPMENT. THE POTENTIAL FOR FURTHER DISCOVERIES IN THIS AREA IS SAID TO BE POOR. THE NEW UZELGINSKI UNDERGROUND MINE IS LOCATED ABOUT 35 KILOMETERS WEST OF UCHALI (CLOSE TO THE MOLODYOZHINI MINE). IT IS CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT AND IS EXPECTED TO COME ON STREAM IN 1993 WITH A CAPACITY OF 1.3 MILLION METRIC TONS PER YEAR, INCREASING TO 2.4 MILLION METRIC TONS PER YEAR BY 1995 AND 3 MILLION METRIC TONS PER YEAR BY THE YEAR 2000. THE UZELGINSKI MINE HAS RESERVES FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS AT AN ANNUAL PRODUCTION RATE OF 3 MILLION METRIC TONS PER YEAR. THE COST OF THIS EXPANSION IS EST AT 115 MILLION RBS. COMOD SPEC. REPORTED IN 1997 REPORT "RUSSIA: STRUCTURE OF THE MINERAL INDUSTRY FOR 1995", THAT COPPER CONTAINED IN CONS WAS 40,000 MT/YR AND ZINC METAL CONTAINED IN ORE WAS 90,000 MTPYR. DATA IS AS OF 1995.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • ADIT NOT CHANGED TO DATA REFLECTED IN 1997 COMMODITY SPEC REPORT UNTIL MORE DATA IS AVAILABLE.
  • ORE RESERVES AT THE UCHALI OPEN PIT ARE SUFFICIENT FOR APPROXIMATELY A FURTHER 5 YEARS OF PRODUCTION, AND BOTH GRADE AND TONNAGE WILL DECLINE AT THE END OF THAT PERIOD. A NEW UNDERGROUND MINE IS BEING DEVELOPED BELOW THE OPEN PIT WHICH WILL EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE OPERATION FOR AN ADDITIONAL 35 YEARS. THE CUT-OFF GRADE IN THE UCHALI OPEN PIT IS 0.4 PERCENT COPPER AND 1.0 PERCENT ZINC.

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE UCHALI DEPOSIT IS MINED BY OPEN PIT METHODS. THE PIT DIMENSIONS ARE 2,000 METERS BY 900 METERS AND 310 METERS DEEP. THE FINAL DEPTH OF THE OPEN PIT WILL BE 324 METERS. THE PIT WALL SLOPES ARE GENERALLY IN THE RANGE OF 33 TO 41 DEGREES, BUT HAVE BEEN STEEPENED TO AS MUCH AS 60 DEGREES TOWARDS THE BOTTOM OF THE PIT. THE UCHALI OPEN PIT MINE EMPLOYS APPROXIMATELY 600 PEOPLE. SHOVELS WITH 4.6 CUBIC METER BUCKETS AND 36 METRIC TON AND 75 METRIC TON TRUCKS ARE USED IN THE OPEN PIT. ALL MOBILE EQUIPMENT IS OF SOVIET ORIGIN.
  • ALL ORE IS DELIVERED BY ROAD TO THE UCHALI CONCENTRATOR, WHICH IS 3 KILOMETERS FROM THE MINE.
