Comments on the production information

  • IN 1982 TWO POTLINES WERE SHUTDOWN & BY JUNE 1983 THREE MORE POTLINES WERE SHUTDOWN DUE TO A DROUGHT THAT LEAD TO THE INABILITY OF THE HYDROELECTRIC STATION TO PROVIDE POWER. BY 1985 THE STATION STILL OPERATED W/ LIMITED ELECTRICITY BECAUSE THE RESERVOIR WAS STILL BELOW THE MINIMUM LEVEL IN ORDER TO OPERATE . 1980-1985 BROOK HUNT AND ASSOCIATES LTD. ALUMINUM PRODUCTION COST SURVEY, PG. 257. (RECORDS 1-4) 1988 BROOK HUNT AND ASSOCIATES LTD. ALUMINUM PRODUCTION COST SURVEY, PG. 1.133. (RECORDS 5-9) IN 1993, PLANT OPERATING AT 90% OF CAPACITY.
  • ALUMINUM SOLD TO CUBA UNDER BARTER ARRANGEMENT. (1990)

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • VOLTA ALUMINIUM CO. LTD. IS THE OPERATOR. SMELTER WAS OPERATING BELOW CAPACITY IN EARLY 1983. IT FINALY CLOSED COMPLETLY BY JUNE 1983 THROUGH 1984. THE LACK OF ELECTRIC POWER DUE TO INCREASING COSTS AND A PROLONGED DROUGHT WERE THE CAUSES. NEW POWER RATES WERE ESTABLISHED IN 1985 TO REOPEN THE SMELTER.

Comments on other economic factors

  • GOVT. TAKES 77% OF THE PROFITS; 46% AS STRAIGHT INCOME, A TAX FOR EDUCATION, AND A DIVIDEND TAX.
  • SMELTER USES BAUXITE IMPORTED FROM JAMAICA. (1988)
