  • FAZENDA BRASILEIRO BEGAN PRODUCTION IN 1984 AS AN OPEN PIT MINE USING HEAP LEACHING FACILITIES TO TREAT OXIDIZED ORE. IT WAS THE FIRST APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY IN LATIN AMERICA. FOLLOWING DISCOVERY OF SULFIDE ORE RESERVES, THE THE DECISION WAS REACHED TO PROCEED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN UNDERGROUND MINE AND PROCESSING FACILITIES AT A COST OF $66.7 MILLION. IN THE FIRST PHASE, WHICH WAS COMPLETED IN 1988, GOLD PRODUCTION WAS INCREASED TO METRIC TONS OR GOLD FROM TREATMENT OF 260,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE. BY THE END OF THE SECOND AND THIRD PHASES, GOLD EXTRACTION WILL REACH 6 METRIC TONS BY 1992. THE OPEN PIT MINE AND HEAP LEACH PLANT WILL SHUT DOWN IN MID-1992 AS ORE RESERVES ARE EXHAUSTED. CAPACITY PRODUCTION EQUALS 400 KILOGRAMS PER MONTH OF GOLD FROM UNDERGROUND ORE, OR 4,800 KILOGRAMS PER YEAR, PLUS 50 TO 60 KILOGRAMS PER MONTH FROM THE OPEN PIT, UNTIL MID-1992. TOTAL PRODUCTION IS CURRENTLY 5,400 KILOGRAMS PER YEAR OR 173,600 OUNCES. WITH EXPANSION OF PLANT CAPACITY, PRODUCTION FROM 1992 ONWARDS IS PLANNED TO BE 6,000 KILOGRAMS PER YEAR.

  • GEOLOGIC RESERVES AT THE IDENTIFIED LEVEL AMOUNT TO 19,513,207 METRIC TONS AT 7.252 GRAMS PER METRIC TON OF GOLD. MEASURED RESERVES ARE 9,795,789 METRIC TONS AT 7.3 GRAMS PER METRIC TON OF GOLD, INDICATED RESERVES ARE 4,819,523 METRIC TONS AT 7.104 GRAMS PER METRIC TON OF GOLD, AND INFERRED RESERVES ARE 4,897,895 METRIC TONS AT 7.3 GRAMS PER METRIC TON OF GOLD. OVERALL GRADE DILUTION IS ABOUT 20 PERCENT. THIS RESERVE FIGURE DOES NOT INCLUDE OXIDE ORE FROM THE OPEN PIT, WHICH HAS ONLY ENOUGH ORE REMAINING UNTIL JULY 1992.
  • THE MINE STARTED UP IN 1984. ORIGINAL INVESTMENT OF $1.7 MILL. UNDERGROUND INVESTMENT OF $66.7 MILLION. CAPACITY IN 1988 WAS 250,000 MTPY ORE WHICH WILL BE INCREASED TO 750,000 MTPY BY 1992 TO PRODUCE 193,000 TR OZ AU PER YEAR. HISTORIC PRODUCTION IS AS FOLLOWS: 1985: 492 KG, 1985: 514 KG, 1987: 574 KG, AND 1988 : 540 KG FROM OPEN PIT AND 185 KG FROM UG THIS MINE WAS THE FIRST HEAP LEACH OPERATION IN BRAZIL.   • UNDERGROUND MINE PRODUCTION IN 1990 AMOUNTED TO 414,234 METRIC TONS OF ORE, YIELDING 5.68 GRAMS OF GOLD PER METRIC TON. THE OPEN PIT MINE PRODUCED 298,541 METRIC TONS OF ORE, YIELDING 3 GRAMS OF GOLD PER METRIC TON.
  • THE FAZENDA BRASILEIRO GOLD PLANT WAS PLANNED TO RECOVER GOLD FROM "PRIMARY SULFIDE ORE" BY THE HYDROMETALLURGICAL CARBON IN PULP (CIP) PROCESS, WITH AN EXPECTED RECOVERY OF 90 PERCENT. THE RUN OF MINE ORE IS CRUSHED AFTER THREE BREAKING/SCREENING STAGES TO A FINAL GRANULOMETRY PASSING 3/8 INCH (9 MILLIMETER). THE CRUSHED MATERIAL IS GROUND IN A BALL MILL AND SENT TO HYDROCYCLONES FOR CLASSIFICATION. THE FINAL GROUND PRODUCT CONTAINS 80 PERCENT MINUS 200 MESH. BETWEEN THE CRUSHING AND CLASSIFICATION STAGES, THE RECOVERY OF MEDIUM-GRAINED GOLD IS MADE BY A GRAVITY CONCENTRATION PROCESS USING JIGS AND SHAKING TABLES. THE MILL PRODUCT (80% OF BULK VOLUME) IS DIRECTED TO THE THICKENER AND THE UNDERFLOW (50% SOLIDS) IS PUMPED TO PRE-AERATION AND CYANIDATION TANKS. THE PULP REMAINS IN CONTACT WITH THE SODIUM CYANIDE REAGENT FOR 24 HOURS IN MECHANICALLY AGITATED TANKS. THE FUNCTION OF THE CYANIDE IS TO SOLUBILIZE THE GOLD IN THE ORE. AFTER THE CYANIDE PROCESS, THE ORE PULP WITH GOLD IN SOLUTION IS GRAVITY FED INTO SIX TANKS, THERE THE ACTIVATED CARBON PARTICLES ACT TO ABSORB THE CHEMICAL COMPLEXES CONTAINED IN THE SOLUBILIZED GOLD. AFTER THE CARBON IS LOADED, IT IS REMOVED FROM THE CIRCUIT AND DESORBED THROUGH THE PASSAGE OF A HEATED NAOH/NACL SOLUTION. THE GOLD RETURNS TO THIS SOLUTION AFTER BEING ELECTROPRECIPITATED IN THE CATHODES (STEEL WOOL) OF THE ELECTROLYTIC CELLS. THE CHARGED CATHODES AS WELL AS THE CONCENTRATE ORIGINATING FROM THE GRAVITY PROCESSES ARE SMELTED IN AN INDUCTION OVEN AND THE RESULTING GOLD IS CAST AS DORE BULLION FOR SHIPMENT FOR REFINING. THE ORE PULP THAT LEAVES THE ADSORPTION STEP IS THE FINAL EFFLUENT WHICH IS BUMPED TO THE TAILING SOLIDS DEPOSITION DAM. THE DAM IS MADE IMPERMEABLE BY AN UNDERLYING LAYER OF PVC. SURFACE LIQUID IS RETURNED TO THE PROCESS FOR REUSE AS RECOVERED WATER. MATERIALS BALANCE - GRADES/CAPACITY: RATED MILL CAPACITY IS 80,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE PER MONTH. FEED GRADES ARE: AU = 5.1 G/MT. FROM THE OPEN PIT THE PRODUCTION IS 25,000 METRIC TONS PER MONTH AT 3.0 GRAMS PER METRIC TON GOLD, WHICH IS TREATED AT A HEAP LEACH FACILITY.
