Comments on the production information

  • SMELTER OUTPUT HAS GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY, REACHING 450,000 MT IN 1978. OF THE 1978 TOTAL, ABOUT 355,000 MT REPRESENTED NEW COPPER AND THE REMAINDER CAME FROM INTERNALLY GENERATED SCRAP. FOR COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THE SMELTING PROCESS--READ E/MJ NOV. 1979, P. 74. THE SMELTER FEED IS SUPPLIED BY THE CHUQUICAMATA CONCENTRAT. CURRENT TECHNOLOGY AT CHUQUICAMATA SMELTER INCLUDES THREE DISTINCT SMELTING ALTERNATIVES: OXY-FUEL EL TENIENTE REVERBERATORY SMELTING, OUTOKUMPU FLASH FURNACE, AND THE EL TENIENTE MODIFIED CONVERTER. THE SMELTER ALSO USES PIERCE-SMITH CONVERTERS, TILTING ANODE FURNACES, AND CASTING WHEELS. TWO SULFURIC ACID PLANTS ARE CURRENTLY IN OPERATION; ONE IS A SINGLE AND THE OTHER IS A DOUBLE CONTACT TYPE. THE PLANT IS OPERATED CLOSE TO FULL CAPACITY, WITH A CURRENT CAPACITY OF 460,000 MTPA COPPER ANODE.
