Comments on the production information

  • BENEFICIATION OPERATIONS COMMENCED IN 1952. THE CONCENTRATOR HAS BEEN MODIFIED SINCE THAT TIME, MOST RECENTLY IN 1975. ORE BENEFICIATION: THE ORE DRESSING PROCESS COMPRISES THREE-STAGE CRUSHING AND TWO-STAGE GRINDING, FOLLOWED BY BULK FLOTATION OF COPPER AND LEAD AND DIFFERENTIAL FLOTATION TO PRODUCE SEPARATE COPPER, LEAD, AND ZINC CONCENTRATES. ALL CONCENTRATES ARE DEWATERED BY FILTERATION. ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION: CONCENTRATOR TAILINGS ARE PPUMPED TO A DAM APPROXIMATELY 5 KILOMETERS FROM THE MILL SITE. THE DAM IS IN NEED OF IMPROVEMENT. IN PARTICULAR, A DRAINAGE SYSTEM IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION OF GROUNDWATER WITH RESIDUAL REAGENTS AND HEAVY METAL IONS. COST INFORMATION: THE COST PER METRIC TON OF ORE MILLED IN 1990 WAS R7.6. POTENTIAL FOR EXPANSION AND DEVELOPMENT: THE CONCENTRATOR IS CURRENTLY BEING REFURBISHED, TO PREPARE FOR A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE GRADE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ORE FEED WHEN THE NOVO ZOLOTUSHINSKI MINE STARTS TO PRODUCE. THE MUCH HIGHER ORE GRADES SHOWN IN THE FORECAST DATA FOR 1995 REFLECT THIS CHANGE IN FEED AND HIGHER PROSPECTIVE GRADES AT THE ZMEINOGORSK MINE.

Comments on other economic factors

  • AROUND 52 PERCENT OF ORE IN 1990 WAS SUPPLIED BY THE ZOLOTUSHINSKI MINE WHICH IS ADJACENT TO THE CONCENTRATOR. EIGHT PERCENT WAS SUPPLIED BY THE ZMEINOGORSK GROUP OF MINES, 62 KILOMETERS AWAY, WHICH INCLUDES THE ZARECHENSKOYE AND STEPNOYE DEPOSITS. THE REMAINING 40 PERCENT OF ORE WAS IMPORTED FROM THE ORLOV, GOREVSKI, AND ZHAIREM MINES WHICH ARE OPERATED BY DIFFERENT ENTERPRISES. IN THE FUTURE, ORE FROM THE NOVO ZOLOTUSHINSKI MINE, CLOSE TO THE EXISTING ZOLOTUSHINSKI MINE, WILL ALSO BE TREATED. COPPER CONCENTRATE IS DELIVERED TO THE BALKHASH SMELTER, LEAD CONCENTRATE IS DELIVERED TO THE UST-KAMENOGORSK SMELTER, AND ZINC CONCENTRATE IS DELIVERED TO THE ALMALIC SMELTER.
