Comments on the production information

  • THE ORE EXTRACTED IS NORMALLY BLENDED WITH HIGH GRADE IRON ORE IMPORTED FROM THE COMMENWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES. PRIOR TO 1989, ALL IRON ORE PRODUCTION WAS SHIPPED FOR USE IN DOMESTIC IRON AND STEEL WORKS. SINCE 1989, THE MINISTRY OF HAS ALLOWED SOME EXPORTING OF IRON PRODUCTS IN THE FORM OF FERROSILICON AND FERROMANGANESE. ACCORDING TO MINISTRY OFFICIALS IN 1989, THE CLUJ-NAPOCA MINE CONSISTS OF EXTREMELY LOW GRADE ORES AND WILL LIKELY BE CLOSED IN THE NEAR FUTURE DUE TO THE INABILITY TO COMPETE ON A UNIVERSAL BASIS. THE SHUTDOWN WILL HAVE NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON STEEL PRODUCTION IN THE COUNTRY DUE TO A 90% RELIANCE ON IMPORTED RAW MATERIAL. THE ORE IS EXTRACTED FROM THE MINE BY OPEN PIT METHODS. IT IS THEN SHIPPED TO THE MILL WHERE CLAYS ARE REMOVED BY MEANS OF WASHING. THE WASHED ORE IS THEN CONCENTRATED BY DRY GRAVITY METHODS. (1989) IN 1989, COMMODITIES RESEARCH UNIT LIMITED QUOTED THE CLUJ-NAPOCA MINE, ALONG WITH ALL OTHER IRON ORE MINES IN ROMANIA, A NON-VIABLE MINE FOR PRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS. AS OF 1989, NO DATA WAS AVAILABLE WHICH INDICATES THE RECOVERY RATES FOR THE CONCENTRATION PROCESS. PRODUCTION OF ORE THROUGHPUT WAS ESTIMATED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 400,000 METRIC TONS PER YEAR FOR YEARS 1987-1990.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • IN 1989, NO STATISTICS INDICATING THE SIZE OF THE RESERVES WERE COLLECTED DUE TO UNREST IN THE COUNTRY AT THE TIME OF THE REVIEW.

General comments

Subject category Comment text
Deposit THE MINISTRY OF MINING OFFICIALS REPORT THE HEAD GRADES OF ORE EXPLOITED IS APPROXIMATELY 28% FE2O3. HOWEVER, SOME PUBLISHED ROMANIAN SOURCES SUGGEST AVERAGE HEAD GRADES OF 31.7% FE2O3. (1989) THE OCCURENCE OF THE MINERALIZATION OF THE ORE BODY IS BELIEVED TO BE THE RESULT OF A COMBINATION OF VOLCANIC AND SEDIMENTARY ACTIVITY. THE ORE IS FOUND ENCLOSED IN A COMBINATION OF UNSPECIFIED IGNEOUS AND UNSPECIFIED SEDIMENTARY ROCK FORMATIONS. (1989) THE ORE AT THE CLUJ-NAPOCA MINE SITE ALSO CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 9% SIO2, 10.1% MGO, AND 18% CAO. (1989)
