PLANS CALL FOR A 9,000,000 MTPY MINE, 2,000,000 MTPY AL203 REFINERY AND A SMELTER (SIZE NOT MENTIONED-POSSIBLY 500,000 MTPY AL-SAID TO BE 4 TIMES LARGER THAN LARGEST EXISTING IN 1975). PROJECT IS A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN GOVT. OF GUINEA AND AN ARAB CONSORTIUM (EGYPT, IRAQ, KUWAIT, LIBYA, SAUDI ARABIA AND UNITED ARAB EMIRATES). AGREEMENT SIGNED IN JAN.1975. JV COMPANY NAME NOT KNOWN. IN 1976: ALUSUISSE MADE RESPONSIBLE FOR EXPLORATION, FEAS. STUDIES, MINE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN FOR AL203 REFINERY. AL203 PLANT EXPECTED ON-STREAM 1982-1983. ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF SMELTER YET TO BE JUSTIFIED IN 1976. AN ALUMINA PLANT AND EVENTUALLY AN ALUMINUM REDUCTION PLANT WILL BE ESTABLISHED ON SITE.
