General comments

Subject category Comment text
Environmental Factors THE NORANDA GREY EAGLE MINE IS A RECENT GOLD AND SILVER MINE (1981) IN THE SAME GENERAL LOCATION AS THE OLDER GREY EAGLE MINE WHICH PRODUCED COPPER. THE WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITIES AT THE NEW MINE WERE BUILT IN COMPLIANCE WITH EXISTING CODES. NEVERTHELESS, CYANIDE-CONTAMINATED EFFLUENT LEAKED FROM THE TAILINGS DAM, AND THE ANTICIPATED ATTENUATION OF FREE CYANIDE BY METALS IN THE FILL MATERIAL OF THE DAM DID NOT OCCUR. NORANDA INSTALLED A COLLECTION SYSTEM AND AN ADDITIONAL TREATMENT PLANT TO TREAT SEEPAGE FROM THE TAILINGS DAM. THE MINE IS NOW CLOSED, BUT THE TREATMENT PLANT WILL BE OPERATED UNTIL CYANIDE IS BELOW DETECTION LEVELS IN THE SEEPAGE, ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 20 YEARS. THE COST OF THESE MITIGATION EFFORTS HAS RESULTED IN NORANDA SUFFERING A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS ON THIS PROJECT.
