Comments on the reserve resource information

  • BAUXITE RESERVES AT THE SREDNETIMAN DEPOSIT, WHICH SHOULD BE PUT UP FOR INTERNATIONAL TENDER, AMOUNT TO APPROXIMATELY 6 MILLION METRIC TONS WHICH, IF BROKEN DOWN, COMES TO APPROXIMATELY 1 MILLION METRIC TONS OF ALUMINA AND 5 MILLION METRIC TONS OF GRAVEL HAVE BEEN EXPLORED AT THE SREDNE-TIMANSKOE DEPOSIT. OPINIONS DICTATE THAT AN ENTERPRISE SHOULD BE BUILT AT THE DEPOSIT WITH THE CAPACITY TO PRODUCE 6.5 MILLION METRIC TONS OF BAUXITE, 1 MILLION METRIC TONS OF ALUMINA ROCK, AND 5.5 MILLION METRIC TONS OF BASALT A YEAR. THE DEPOSIT SHOULD COST, ACCORDING TO PROJECTS, ABOUT RB 4-5 BILLION TO DEVELOP AT MID-1992 PRICES. OTHER COMPARATIVELY SMALL DEPOSITS OF BAUXITES AND ALUMINA ARE BEING MINED BY PLANTS AT THE LENINGRAD REGION DEPOSITS OF PIKALEVSKOE AND BOKSITOGORSKOE. A NEW 100,000 METRIC TON-A-YEAR ALUMINA PLANT, WHICH WILL COST RB 360 MILLION AT MID-1992 PRICES, IS PLANNED AT PIKALEVO. BAUXITE HAS ALSO BEEN DISCOVERED AT THE SEVERONEZHESKOE DEPOSIT IN ARKHANGELSK REGION, WHERE RESERVES ARE ESTIMATED AT 5 TO 7 MILLION METRIC TONS WITH AVERAGE ALUMINIUM CONTENT OF 50 TO 55 PERCENT. THE REGION MAY ALSO BEGIN THE PRODUCTION OF ALUMINIUM FROM NON-BAUXITES, LIKE THE NEFELINE ORE FOUND ON THE KOLA PENINSULA. AS WAS JUST MENTIONED, APART FROM THE SREDNETIMAN DEPOSIT, RUSSIA HAS A NUMBER OF EXPLORED BAUXITE DEPOSITS, MOSTLY IN THE URAL REGION, WHICH HAS 250 MILLION METRIC TONS OF RESERVES. DESPITE A DEVELOPED INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE REGION, EXPORTS SAY DIFFICULT MINING CONDITIONS "MAY MAKE SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENTS UNPROFITABLE".

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE MINE WOULD BE OPEN SHAFT AND EMPLOY 2500 LABORERS, 120,000 TONS OF COAL PER YEAR.

Deposit PLANS CALL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SREDNETIMAN BAUXITE FIELD BY 1999, AT A CAPACITY OF 6.5 MILLION MTPY. THIS WOULD REQUIRE COMPLETION OF RAIL ACCESS BY 1996. BASED ON 1991 PRICES, IT WOULD COST 12 BILLION RUBLES. PROPERTY IS TO BE PUT UP FOR TENDER IN 1993.
