Deposit SIZABLE COMPLEX BEING BUILT, SIZABLE, GOOD GRADE RESERVES. MINE, MILL, SMELTER, REFINERY, GOOD TECHNOLOGY, OF GROWING IMPORTANTCE. SLATED FOR LARGE-SCALE OUTPUT CAPACITY (60,000 TPY LEAD AND ZINC). CONSTRUCTION REPORTED TO HAVE BEGUN BY 1985 AND COULD HAVE BEEN IN PRODUCTION IN 1990--NOT CONFIRMED. PROSPECTING HAS SHOWN THAT THE MINE HAS VERIFIED RESERVES OF 14.32 MILLION TONS OF ZINC AND LEAD METAL CONTAINED IN 150 MILLION TONS OF ORE. 83 PERCENT IS ZINC, ROUGHLY 11.88 MILLION TONS (THEREFORE LEAD RESERVES ARE ABOUT 2.4 MILLION TONS). DEPOSITS ARE SUITABLE FOR OPEN MINING, AND THE MINE WILL PRODUCE 60,000 TONS OF ZINC AND 5,000 TONS OF LEAD A YEAR BY 1995. THE LIFE OF THE MINE IS ESTIMATED AT 35 YEARS. A 131-KM HIGHWAY IS BEING BUILT FROM LANPING TO JIANCHUAN COUNTY, EAST OF THE MINE. IT IS EXPECTED TO BE PUT INTO USE IN 1993.
