Deposit THE ILO SMELTER PROCESSES COPPER CONCENTRATES FROM THE CUAJONE AND TOQUEPALA MINES. SMELTER CAPACITY WAS EXPANDED FROM 126,000 MTPY TO 290,000 MTPY OF BLISTER IN 1977 TO PROCESS THE COMBINED PRODUCTION FROM THE TWO MINES - 1 MILLION STPY OF CONCENTRATES. FOR PROCESS DESCRIPTION REFER TO THE E/MJ ARTICLE NOTED IN THE BIBLIOGRAPHY. THE CURRENT TECHNOLOGY USED AT THE ILO PLANT INCLUDE REVERB- ERATORY SMELTING FURNACES, PIERCE-SMITH CONVERTERS, ROTATING HOLDING FURNACES, AND CASTING WHEELS FOR CASTING BLISTER CAKES AND INGOTS. THE CAPACITY OF THE SMELTER IS CURRENTLY 990,000 MTPA OF NMBM (NEW METAL BEARING MATERIAL, COPPER CONCENTRATES AND CEMENT). THE PLANT IS OPERATING AT CLOSE TO FULL CAPACITY. NO SULFUR DIOXIDE EMMISION CONTROL IS CURRENTLY USED, HOWEVER POLUTION CONTROL MAY BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE FUTURE, IN LIGHT OF NEWLY ENACTED ENVIRONMENTAL CODES RECENTLY ESTABLISHED IN PERU.
