  • SULFURIC ACID AND TECHNICAL GRADE SELENIUM ARE SOLD; IT WAS NOT CLEAR WHAT ORGANIZATION MARKETED THESE PRODUCTS. BLISTER PRODUCTION IS LIMITED BECAUSE OF THE UNDER CAPACITY ACID PLANT. HIGHER PRODUCTION RATES COULD BE ACHIEVED IF THE CU GRADE COULD BE INCREASED WITHOUT INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF S IN THE CONCENTRATE. CURRENT PLANS CALL FOR ADDING A THIRD ACID PLANT TO INCREASE COPPER CAPACITY. A NEW WATER PURIFICATION PLANT IS BEING CONSTRUCTED THAT WILL REMOVE ARSENIC, ALLOWING THE HIGH-ARSENIC CHELOPECH CONCENTRATE TO BE PROCESSED.

CONCENTRATES ARE BLENDED AT THE SMELTER, WITH INDIVIDUAL GRADES VARYING FROM 9% TO 16% CU.
  • CRU REPORTS THAT THE TOTAL CAPACITY OF THE SMELTER REFINERY IS 120,000 MT REFINED COPPER PER YEAR. CERNA REPORTED THAT THE SMELTER HAD A CAPACITY OF 100,000 MT OF BLISTER COPPER PER YEAR. CERNA AND CRU REPORTED THAT GEORGI DAMYANOV WAS UNDERUTILIZED BECAUSE OF DECLINING DOMESTIC COPPER PRODUCTION. IN ORDER TO MAKE UP THE SHORTFALL IN FEED TONNAGE, CONCENTRATES FROM THE U.S. AND U.S.S.R. HAVE BEEN IMPORTED. THE SMELTER/REFINERY COMPLEX WAS BUILT IN 1958; THE FLASH SMELTER WAS BUILT IN 1987 THROUGH A JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT WITH OUTOKUMPU OY OF FINLAND. AFTER BLENDING, CONCENTRATES ARE DRIED IN ROTARY KILNS. THE DRIED CONCENTRATES ARE THEN FED INTO THE FURNACE. THE FURNACE CHARGE IS HEATED BY HEAVY BURNERS. SLAG IS TAPPED OUT FOR REMOVAL AND THE REMAINING CU MATTE IS TAPPED OUT FOR TRANSFER TO CONVERTORS. THE CONVERTORS PRODUCE A BLISTER CU. CRU REPORTS THAT FLASH FURNACE SLAG IS COMBINED WITH CONVERTOR SLAG AND RETURNED TO THE SMELTER. THIS RUN-AROUND MATERIAL COMPRISES 9% OF THE TOTAL SMELTER FURNACE FEED. FURNACE GASES ARE PASSED THROUGH A WASTE HEAT EXCHANGER AND PARTICULATE FILTERS BEFORE GOING TO THE ACID PLANTS. SO2 CONCENTRATION RANGES FROM 5.0% TO 8.5% BEFORE ENTERING ONE OF 120 M3/HR PLANTS.

EXHAUST GASES CONTAIN 0.3% SO2 FROM THE SINGLE CONTACT ACID PLANT AND 0.05% SO2 FROM THE DOUBLE CONTACT ACID PLANT. ACID PLANT GASES ARE DISCHARGED THROUGH A 120 M CHIMNEY. ALL OTHER GASES ARE DISCHARGED THROUGH A 325 M CHIMNEY AFTER BEING CLEANED BY LURGI ELECTRO-FILTERS.
