DEPOSIT PROSPECTED BY TRENCHING AND SHALLOW DIAMOND DRILLING BY MINES&GEOL.DEPT.IN 1968.-POSSIBLE ORE RESERVES IN EXCESS OF 60,000 LONG TONS AT 49%CR2O3 AND CR:FE OF 3.12:1. ASSOCIATED WITH NICKEL SILICATE.MINING MAG.SEPT.1974 SAYS" NI RESERVE ALONE ESTIMATED AT 14 MILLION TONS." FIVE FOREIGN FIRMS CONTENDING FOR CHROME DEPOSITS IN WEST POKOT DISTRICT-ABOUT $6,500,000 BEING SPENT BY THE 5 IN 1975.NIPPON KOKAN CO.,C.ITOH&CO.&KOKAN MINING CO.-ALL OF JAPAN-WERE APPLYING TO THE KENYA GOVT.FOR RIGHTS IN 1976. WESTERN OIL CO.IN CONJUNCTION WITH OIL VENTURES INC.OF THE U.S.SENT METALLURGICAL TEST SAMPLE TO FRANCE IN 1974 OF A NI-CR ORE FROM DEPOSIT LOCATED BY THEM IN THE WEST POKOT DISTRICT-NOT KNOWN IF THE SAME DEPOSIT.

  • CHROMITE ASSOCIATED WITH GARNIERITE N; RESERVES IN AREA SAID TO BE 12,698,000 MT CR2O3 RESERVES AS OF 1968, NO NEW INFO. AVAIL.
  • EXTENSIVE DRILLING BY JAPANESE HAD FOUND THAT THE ORE BODY WAS NOT CONTINUOUS AS THOUGHT BUT SEVERAL PODIFORM ORE BODIES-RESERVE DOWNGRADED TO 8,000 MT AS OF 1977.
