Comments on the geologic information

  • BARITE HILL IS LOCATED IN A DIVISION OF THE CAROLINA SLATE BELT THAT EXTENDS FROM THE TOWN OF MC CORMICK (4 KM N OF THE DEPOSIT), INTO GEORGIA. THIS BELT CONSISTS OF LOWER GREENSCHISTS FACIES AND EARLY TO MIDDLE CAMBRIAN VOLCANIC, VOLCANICLASTIC, AND EPICLASTIC ROCKS. IT IS BOUNDED ON THE WEST BY AMPHIBOLITE FACIES, LATE PRECAMBRIAN VOLCANIC AND EPICLASTIC ROCKS OF THE CHARLOTTE BELT, AND ON THE EAST BY THE MODOC FAULT, A ZONE OF EXTENSIVE DUCTILE SHEARING AND MYLONITIZATION. THE MINERALIZATION IS OXIDIZED TO A DEPTH OF ABOUT 30 M AND GENE- ALLY STRIKES NE IN LENTICULAR BODIES. SILVER IS ALSO FOUND IN SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS WITH THE GOLD. A SIGNIFICANT TONNAGE OF LOW-GRADE SULFIDE MINERALIZATION EXISTS BELOW THE OXIDE ZONE BUT IS NOT AMENABLE TO HEAP LEACHING.
