Comments on the geologic information

  • THE GERMANO DEPOSIT IS TYPICAL OF THE IRON ORE QUADRANGLE- SUPERFICIALLY ENRICHED HEMATITE DERIVED FROM THE HOST ITABIRITE AND CAPPED BY A THIN LAYER OF WEATHERED LATERITE AND CANGA. THE DEPOSIT OUTCROPS ALONG THE GENTLE EASTERLY SLOPE OF A NORTH-SOUTH RIDGE. IT DIPS 30 DEGREES TO THE EAST AT A SOMEWHAT GREATER ANGLE THAN THE GENTLY SLOPING SURFACE. THE HANGINGWALL CONSISTS OF WEATHERED PHYLLITE AND QUARTZITE. THE FOOTWALL IS OF THE SAME MATERIAL, BUT LITTLE WEATHERED. THE IRON FORMATION HAS BEEN INTENSELY FOLDED AND FAULTED, THEN DEEPLY WEATHERED. ALTERATION HAS DISINTEGRATED AND SOFTENED THE ORE, LEAVING THE IRON ORE FORMATION SOMEWHAT POROUS.

  • ORE CONCENTRATE IS TRANSPORTED 246 MILES TO PANTA UBU WITH CAPACITY TO MOVE 12 MILLION TONS OF IRON ORE CONCENTRATE SLURRY PER YEAR. THE PIPELINE CROSSES TWO MOUNTAIN RANGES AND MAKES A MAXIMUM HEIGHT 3878 TO 65 FEET AND IS 20 INCHES IN DIAMETER. NO PORTION WAS LAID AT MORE THAN 15% GRADIANT. THERE ARE TWO PUMPING STATIONS. PUMP STATION 1 IS OPERATED BY 1250 HP PUMPS, IN THE BATCH MODE. THE SLURRY IS THICKENED TO 70-72% SOLIDS IN A STORAGE TANK WHERE IT IS DRAWN TO ONE OF TWO CHARGE PUMPS WHICH BOOSTS THE PRESSURE TO MEET THE MAIN LINE PUMP REQUIREMENTS (APPROX. 0.4 HP). DILUTION WATER IS ADDED TO MAINTAIN 67% SOLIDS BY WEIGHT, CORROSION INHIBITORS AT A RATE OF 0.25 KG/T ARE METERED INTO THE LINE (LIME AND 75 PPM CATALYZED SODIUM SULFATE). THE LINE THEN GOES INTO THE MAIN PUMP HOUSE WHERE THE MAIN LINE PUMPS PROVIDE THE NECESSARY LIFT TO PUMP TO STATION 2. PUMP STATION 2 IS LOCATED 150 KM FROM STATION 1 AND APPROXIMATELY 200 M LOWER. IT IS A CARBON COPY OF STATION 1. THE SLURRY IS DILUTED FURTHER TO 60% SOLIDS, AND DUMPED DIRECTLY INTO THE SUCTION OF THE MAINLINE PUMPS AT STATION 2. THE SLURRY PASSES SEVERAL VALVE STATIONS UNTIL IT REACHES THE PORT.
