  • THE DEPOSITS ARE LOCATED WITHIN AN ALKALINE MASSIF. BAUXITE OCCURRENCES ARE FOUND MAINLY IN THE RIM AND INTERNAL PLATEAU. DEPTH OF MINERALIZATION VARIES WITH DEPOSIT. STRIKE IS GENERALLY NW-SE. DIP VARIES FROM 0-28 DEGREES. THE DEPOSITS ARE FOUND IN PRECAMBRIAN MAFIC VOLCANICS OVERLAIN BY CRETACEOUS SEDIMENTARY ROCKS. THE BAUXITE OF THE REGION IS FORMED BY THE WEATHERING OF THE ALKALINE IGNEOUS ROCKS.

Deposit NEW RESERVES ARE BEING DEVELOPED AT CATAGUASES, IN RIO DE JANEIRO STATE. THE COMPANY PLANS TO RAIL 500,000 MTPY OF BAUXITE 840 KM TO THE MAIRINQUE REFINERY. THE PRESENT MINE AT POCO DE CALDAS IS 350 KM FROM MAIRINQUE. AS OF JAN. 1991, THE MINE AT CATAGUASES IS READY TO COME ON LINE. PRODUCTION AT POCO DE CALDAS IS TO BE REDUCED TO 600,000 MTPY TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE MINE, WHICH IS NEARING EXHAUSTION.
