Comments on the production information

  • MINING OPERATIONS AT THE SIBAI MINE COMMENCED IN 1948. THE COST OF MINING ONE METRIC TON OF ORE IN 1990 WAS R9.61. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNDERGROUND MINE WILL BE COMPLETED IN THE MID-1990S. A NEW ORE BODY HAS BEEN DISCOVERED APPROXIMATELY ONE KILOMETER FROM THE EXISTING MINE. IT IS CURRENTLY BEING EVALUATED, BUT THERE ARE NO PLANS FOR ITS DEVELOPMENT AT THE PRESENT. THE POTENTIAL FOR FURTHER DISCOVERIES IN THE SIBAI AREA IS SAID TO BE GOOD. ABOUT TWO MILLION METRIC TONS OF OXIDE ORE HAVE BEEN STOCKPILED AT THE MINE. DURING THE PERIOD FROM 1993 THROUGH 1997, THE SIBAI MINE IS PLANNED TO EXPAND TO A NEW CAPACITY OF 1,500,000 METRIC TONS OF ORE AT A COST OF RBS 148,500,000.

Comments on the reserve resource information

  • ORE RESERVES AT THE SIBAI OPEN PIT MINE ARE SUFFICIENT FOR APPROXIMATELY A FURTHER 4 YEARS OF PRODUCTION. AN UNDERGROUND MINE IS CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED BELOW THE OPEN PIT. THE UNDERGROUND MINE WILL COME INTO PRODUCTION IN 1995 TO 1996, AND IT WILL EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE OPERATION FOR AN ADDITIONAL 20 YEARS. NEVERTHELESS, GRADES ARE EXPECTED TO FALL IN THE FUTURE. THE CUTOFF GRADE IN THE SIBAI OPEN PIT IS 0.2 PERCENT COPPER AND 0.5 PERCENT ZINC.

Comments on other economic factors

  • THE SIBAI DEPOSIT IS MINED BY OPEN PIT METHODS. PIT DIMENSIONS ARE 2,000 METERS BY 2,000 METERS AND 400 METERS DEEP. BENCHES ARE AT 15 METER INTERVALS AND THE FINAL DEPTH OF THE OPEN PIT WILL BE 469 METERS. WASTE ROCK IS TRANSPORTED TO A DUMP 4.5 KILOMETERS FROM THE OPEN PIT.
  • ALL ORE IS DELIVERED BY RAIL TO THE SIBAI CONCENTRATOR WHICH IS 4 KILOMETERS FROM THE MINE.
