Deposit THE KIDD CREEK DIVISION OF FALCONBRIDGE LTD. IS A BASE METAL AND METALLURGICAL COMPLEX LOCATED NEAR TIMMINS, ONTARIO. THE KIDD CREEK OPERATION PRODUCES COPPER, ZINC, CADMIUM AND SILVER, AND WILL PRODUCE INDIUM IN THE FUTURE. PLANNING FOR A COPPER SMELTER BEGAN IN 1973. FLASH SMELTING PROCESSES ALONG WITH THE MITSUBISHI CONTINUOUS SMELTING PROCESS WERE STUDIED, AND A DECISION WAS MADE IN 1975 TO USE TECHNOLOGY OFFERED BY MITSUBISHI METAL CORP. OF JAPAN. THIS INCLUDED THE MITSUBISHI MI SMELTING PROCESS, AS WELL AS THE ONAHAMA NUMBER THREE TANKHOUSE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE REFINERY. SMELTER CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN 1976; THE PLANT WAS COMMISIONED IN JUNE 1981, WITH A CAPACITY OF 59,000 MTPA ANODE COPPER. CAPACITY OF BOTH THE SMELTER AND REFINERY HAVE INCREASED OVER THE YEARS TO THEIR PRESENT LEVELS OF AT LEAST 100,000 MTPA ANODES AND 96,000 MTPA OF CATHODES. THE SMELTER CONSISTS OF A MATERIAL HANDLING SECTION, ROTARY/FLASH DRYER, AND THE MITSUBISHI CONTINUOUS SMELTING LINE, CONSISTING OF A SMELTING FURNACE, A SLAG CLEANING FURNACE AND A CONVERTING FURNACE. BLISTER COPPER IS FIRE REFINED IN A CONVENTIONAL ANODE FURNACE AND THE ANODES ARE CAST IN A HAZELETT CONTINUOUS CASTING MACHINE. ANODE SCRAP FROM THE REFINERY IS RE-MELTED AT THE SMELTER IN AN ASARCO SHAFT FURNACE AND THE MOLTEN COPPER TRANSFERRED TO THE ANODE FURNACES. THE ANODES ARE TRANSFERRED TO THE TANKHOUSE WHICH UTILIZES JUMBO CELLS. BY PRODUCTS FROM THE PLANT INCLUDE SULFURIC ACID AND ANODE SLIMES. NO CURRENT INFORMATION HAS BEEN FOUND FOR THIS PROPERTY AS OF JUNE 24, 1994.
